以下文字来自澳大利亚总理约翰·霍华德(John
Howard),这是他此次专门为杨澜访谈录六周年主题征文所写的回函,在这里与各位分享--
Australia's relationship with
China has undergone a remarkable transformation over the last
decade. Based on current rates of growth, China is set to become
Australia's largest trading partner in 2007, which also marks the
35th anniversary of our diplomatic relations.
Australian exports to China were
worth over $23 billion in 2006 and we are pursuing further
opportunities to enhance our economic ties through the free trade
agreement currently under negotiation.
The rapid expansion of our
economic relationship has been underpinned by our close
people-to-people links. Over 90,000 Chinese students were enrolled
in Australia in 2006, making China our largest source of
international students. China is also one of Australia's largest
sources of migrants and visitors. These people-to-people and
cultural links will continue to draw our countries closer together
in the years to come.
As host of the Asia-Pacific
Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2007, Australia is continuing
to deepen its close engagement with the region. APEC has evolved as
the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation,
trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific, which has emerged as the
fastest growing and most dynamic region in the world. Together APEC
economies account for 56 per cent of the global economy and 44 per
cent of world trade.
Australia has a large and
ambitious economic agenda for APEC in 2007, focused on support for
the WTO Doha Round of world trade negotiations, promoting regional
economic integration and work on 'behind-the-border' barriers to
trade and investment. Australia's economic destiny lies firmly in
the APEC region, which accounts for over 69 per cent of Australia's
total trade.
I have also placed clean
development and climate change at the centre of the APEC Economic
Leaders' Meeting in 2007. Australia has been at the forefront of
practical regional initiatives on climate change and we have been
working closely with China through the Asia Pacific Partnership on
Clean Development and Climate, the Australia-China Climate Change
Partnership and the Australia-China Joint Coordination Group on
Clean Coal Technologies.
I am confident Australia's close
relationship with China will strengthen further in the coming years
as the scope of our cooperation and Australia's engagement in the
Asia-Pacific region continues to expand.
John Howard
