历来少见媒体的任正非先生,最近连续两次见了。他说得好,我徘徊于他说的字里行间,若有所悟,对一位同学说,任正非是二十一世纪的哈代。经过解释后,这位同学同意我说的。
哈代(Godfrey Harold Hardy,1877-1947)何许人也?他是英国剑桥的数学大师,著作等身,是中国数学家华罗庚的老师。最为重要的贡献,是他发掘了印度的年轻数学天才拉马努金(Ramanujan)。拉马努金是人类历史上最伟大的数学天才,没有读过什么书,自修学数,1914年寄了一些数学文稿给哈代,哈代惊为天人,力排众议,把拉马努金邀请到剑桥去。这个近于神话式的故事今天拍成了一部很好的电影。
说任正非给我的印象是哈代,是源于上世纪三十年代,哈代写了一本很小的算是自传类的书,题为《一个数学家的自白》(A Mathematician’s Apology)。在该书的开头哈代说了一段话很有名,常被引用。虽然他的英文是好的,但因为哲理湛深,不易懂,我在这里先附录他的英语原文,然后再翻为中文给读者吧:

The function of a mathematician is to do something, to prove new theorems, to add to mathematics, and not to talk about what he or other mathematicians have done.
