法国于1975年6月27日成为联合国教科文组织世界遗产委员会成员国。 世界遗产委员会任期：1976-1978，1978-1985，1987-1993，1993-1999，2009-2013。
截止2021年7月31日第44届世界遗产大会闭幕，法国共计拥有49项世界遗产，遗产包括42项文化遗产，6项自然遗产，1项文化与自然双重遗产，其中1项与西班牙共有，1项与比利时共有，1项为6国共有，2项为7国共有，1项为,18国共有。遗产数量并列世界第4位。
