Belinda
Q:As we all know, fencing is really time consuming, so how do you manage your time?
A: I don’t stress myself with a lot of AP I’m not interested in taking, like biology and chemistry. I spend a set amount of time doing fencing, and I spend a set amount of time doing homework. It(time management) is kind of like setting your priority. If I’m focusing on fencing, it’s my priority, and if I have a huge project due, I have to work on that first. It’s mostly about setting priority and keeping your goal in mind, your big goal. Once you have that done, you can pretty much do whatever you want.
Q: Do you have any other interest besides fencing?
A: Actually I really like chorus. I used to do piano as a kids. I did it for ten years and I recently stopped it because I am too busy. Chorus for me is an alternative way to do musics without spending extra time outside of school. I think it’s a really fun time to bond with people and make musics at the same time. Also going to (music) festival is really great. My experience in chorus also helps me with fencing and my academy, because it gives me an opportunity to work out different parts of my brain.
Q: How do you think your fencing experience help you with others thing in your life?
A: Well actually I’m currently taking a break from fencing, and I feel like I’m doing worse in my academics. When I do fencing, I focus on a goal; when you focus on a goal, it makes you focus on everything, not just fencing. I had a set schedule when I’m fencing in order for me to have time to fence. When you compete, you have a mindset that help you to think more logically, in a way that makes it easier to study.
Q: How do you deal with your pressure?
A: It’s actually not that stressful for me(laugh). I think it’s because it’s working different parts of my brain: sports, musics, academic. I think it kind of invigorate you.
Q: What is the best part of your high school experience?
A: Probably just hanging out with my friends. Right now when I have more free time, I think making bonds with people is very, very enjoyable, in a different way from doing things for your own goal, Like I have been doing in the past four years. So my most enjoyable experience in high school is probably right now, when I’m hanging out with many people.
Q: What do you do in your free time?
A: I just try to fill my free time with activities for the most time. I mean we still need time to chill out, watching Netflix, eating chocolate, and you know, just relax. But I just try not to be “unactive”. For example last summer I was visiting my brother and sister in New York. I was fencing and doing internship at the same time.
Q: Do you have any recommandation for high school student to increase their standardized test scores?
A: For me I took a summer prep camp. I took one PSAT prep course in Freshman year. The prep course is helpful for me, but for a lot of people it’s really unhelpful.
Q: Did you meet any obstacles in your application process?
A: One thing that is kind of weird is that I did my application on paper because I was recruited. The biggest obstacle I face was to facing my entire life(when writing essay). I’m generally not that good at writing about myself, so it was kind of hard to face everything that has passed in the past 16 years. I don’t think it’s fair to ask a 16 year old to write about his entire life and make himself look “presentable”. I would say it’s pretty hard.
Q: How do you solve that?
A: I just showed the things I am really passionate about. For the common app essay I wrote about how sport has impacted my entire life. It started from gymnastic, and I did figure skating, then I did fencing. Sports has influenced me to who I am today.
Q: What major did you apply?
A: I am undeclared(laugh). I think I am just going to take a lot of classes in freshman year and find out what I like. I am sort of interested in computer programming, but I haven’t really done much of it, so I wouldn’t really know. I think I am primarily going to focus on Business.
Q: What’s your expectation for your college life? which part of college are you looking forward to the most?
A: In general, I think it’s just meeting a lot of new people. I think it’s a really valuable experience to meet a lot of people. In doing so you are finding more about yourself like what do you want to do. Because I am going in as an undeclared, I really want to find out more about what I’m going to do for the rest of my life, or at least for the next ten years.
Q: Do you feel like it’s necessary for parents to worry about their kids constantly?
A: No. I think a thing that a lot of parents are lacking are the belief that their kids can find their interest. I think what parents should really try to do is try to help their kids find out about their passion, and fully support them. For their kids it(the passion) is not necessarily something they wanted to pursue, but that is definitely something worth looking into.
Q: How did your parents influence you in your whole high school career?
A: I don’t know. Parents influence you wherever you go(laugh). I think all parents influence their kids to some extent. My family is a fencing family: my sister did it, my brother did it, and I did it. I guess I chose to fence because of that.
Q: If you can say one thing to your parents, what would you say?
A: I would probably say thank you I guess. I love you, that too.
Q: If you have one word to all the parents of seniors, what would you say?
A: Congratulation on completing your journey. You are now free and can do whatever you want for the next, forever basically. Your kids will take care of you(love).
Q: If you have one word that you could say to all the rising seniors, what would you say?
A: Good luck. Don’t stress. You will be great. Oh and don’t procrastinate on your college application. If you do that, it will be very stressful.
