Ode to the Plum Blossom
--- to the tune of Bu Suan Zi
by Lu You
Outside the post-house, beside the broken bridge,
Alone, deserted, a flower blooms.
Saddened by her solitude in the falling dusk,
She is assailed by wind and rain.
Let other flowers be envious!
She craves not Spring for herself alone.
Her petals may be ground in the mud,
But her fragrance will endure.
ODE TO THE MUME BLOSSOM
Tune: “SONG OF DIVINATION”
Beside the broken bridge and outside the post hall
A flower is blooming forlorn.
Saddened b
y her solitude at nightfall;
By wind and rain she’s further torn.
Let other flowers their envy pour.
To spring she lays no claim.
Fallen in mud and ground to dust, she seems no more.
But her fragrance is still the same.

Pu Suan Zi - To Flowering Plum
-- Lu You (1125 - 1210)
By the broken bridge near a way station
For nobody this lonely plum tree blooms
As night is falling no one shares her gloom
Instead chilly wind and rain is in action
She has no desire to compete for spring
And doesn't concern those envious flowers
While the fallen petals ground to mud and dirt
Only the same fragrance is remaining

Pu Suan Zi - Ume
-- Lu, You (1125 - 1210)
Unattended Ume
Blooms lonely by
A broken bridge outside
Of a relay station
Glooms alone while
It has been dusk
And besides
The chilly wind and rain
No desire to compete
Grimly for the Spring
Let alone the envy
Of flowers many
Fallen petals part of mud
Ground and become dust
Only the fragrance
Remains the same
The Diviner-Ode to the Plum
By Lu You
Tr. Zhao Yanchun
Beside the broken post bridge there
It blows, solitarily sane
The dimming dusk it can hardly bear
And there's the slash of wind and rain
It contends for spring with no one
That horde of flowers, let them flare
It falls into dust, trundled to none
Its aroma welling as e'er

第一种
By the broken bridge near the post in repose
She, unseen and forlorn, blazingly blows.
Saddened, she stands alone in the dusk's reign,
Exposed to more attacks form the wind and rain.
With no intention to be the spring's pride,
She ignores the envy from flowers by her side.
When ground to dust and existing no more,
She'll still smell as fragrant as before.
第二种
By the broken-down bridge, outside the coach inn,
Belonging nowhere,
It blooms alone and thin.
All by itself in the dusk—’Tis sad enough;
Add to that the rain and the wind.
Not deigning to compete in spring,
Let the beauties their envy fling.
Scattered and fallen,
It is ground into mud and turned to dust,
Only its fragrance persists.
By a broken bridge outside the horse relay station
plum flowers bloom for no one.
Already it is evening and sad and lonely
and they are beaten by rainy wind.
They don't wish to compete for spring,
though other flowers envy their early blossoming.
When petals drop to the mud and are ground to dust
the fragrance remains the same
Beside a broken bridge
by a post station
a fragrance untended
and solitary
grieving in the dusk
laden with loneliness
and whipped by wind and rain.
Not for it the bitter strife
of springtime glories
envy of the myrial flora
concerns it not
fallen, mingled with dust
crushed into mud
the fragrance yet lingers on.
The Plum Blossoms
By Lu You
There’s a plum tree blooming alone with nobody’s care;
It stands beyond the post hotel by a broken bridge there,
Like a solitary lady suffering from her sorrows at dusk.
The storm is so hard to make her still sadder and bitter.
She claims nothing from spring in spite of her beauty.
She allows and endures others to be envious and greedy.
Fallen on earth, her blossoms might be ground into mud;
But her fragrance will be the same as before in the world.
