一、 教材分析:
 1、教材的地位和作用
 本单元的主题是人与社会,主要话题是“科学家如何以探索、钻研、无畏的科研精神验证未知的科学真理”,包括了两篇介绍科学家与科学研究的阅读,其中本阅读课JOHN SNOW DEFEATS “KING” CHOLERA是单元第一篇阅读属于精读课,是介绍科学家约翰.斯诺与他的科学研究的文章,承载着体现本单元主题思想与品格素养、本单元的重点词汇和语法项目过去分词做定语与表语的重要作用,与此同时,也为第二篇阅读做好知识背景铺垫。
 2、文本分析
 该阅读文章介绍了英国医学科学家John Snow从发现霍乱成因中的问题、提出假设,选择调查方法、收集和分析数据、寻找支持证据,直到最后得出结论并提出解决方案的整个过程。文章按照科学研究的步骤和时间顺序展开。重点词汇主要涉及疾病、治疗、病因等,如:defeat,physician,expose, cure,suspect,blame,句式主要涉及有关科学研究步骤和具体方法等如:sb/sth suggest that…,sb find that…,sb notice that…,sb suspect that…,词汇还涉及一些有关John Snow
的为人品质的描述如:caring, brave,enthusiastic,strict,rigorous。本文的价值取向在于学生通过本文的学习,体会到John Snow在霍乱防治中所作出的突出贡献和他作为杰出科学家正直的人品和科学严谨的态度。本阅读课包括Warming-upPre-reading在内计划是用个两个课时,Warming-upPre-reading可在进行阅读课前用一个课时解决,为阅读课作好知识背景的储蓄和铺垫。

二、 学情分析
    本单元是高二学生进入新学年的第一单元,学生刚从假期回归学校,学习热情高涨浓烈,学习态度也较认真。学生大体已具备了在阅读中学会预测、获取细节信息的能力,部分学生能用英语表达观点。但是多数学生在理解和整合知识、逻辑推理和分析论证观点以及批判评价方面的能力都比较欠缺。此外,虽然高一模块四第二单元有学过农业学家袁隆平的文章,对科学家及其贡献有一定程度的了解,但对科学家研究的具体步骤是很陌生的,对科学精神缺乏深层的理解,也对霍乱和John Snow毫无了解。
三、 教学目标&重难点
 在本课学习结束时,学生能够:
1.获取梳理文中有关 John Snow 本人和他霍乱的事实性信息;
2.概括、整合、阐释John Snow 为阻止霍乱蔓延所采取的研究步骤(即
How John Snow defeat cholera);
3.推断John Snow作为科学家的优秀品质并举例论证。

教学重/难点;学生通过阅读,获取关于John Snow研究霍乱起因全过程的结构知识,整合推断出科学研究的步骤以及科研精神。

四、 教法与学法:

       2. 学法:  自主学习 小组合作、讨论 信息结构图

五、 教学过程

 教学设计理念:基于语篇解读和学情分析,设计体现学习理解、应用实践、迁移创新三类活动的关联与递进的教学活动,体现了新课标的指向英语学科核心素养的英语学习活动观。

第一部分:Warming-up&Pre-reading

 Step 1 用问题之前学过的袁隆平的图片问(Who is he? What is his achievement?,以及问题What kinds of scientists do you know? When we talk about great scientists, who will come into your mind? Why? 导入本单元的主题与话题以及Warming-up的科学家与其作出的成就的匹配练习。


Step 2 用问题How can a scientist make his great achievement?/How can a scientist be great? 让学生发散思维想到除了个人的能力和个性外,还有要通过scientific research去验证想法从而发明物品或者解决问题。

Step 3 用问题How do scientists do scientific research?从而引出课文Pre-reading的科学研究步骤的排序,为阅读课文作好支架。

第二部分:Reading(课文阅读)
Lead-in :通过观看霍乱爆发时的一些图片或者视频,让学生了解霍乱的一些症状,并分享对这种公共卫生灾难的感受,引出问题:“If you were a doctor, what would you do to deal with the situation?”进入课文标题
Step1 通过标题JOHN SNOW DEFEATS “KING” CHOLERA预测文章的主要内容引出文章主要讲How did John Snow defeat King cholera.从而引导学生利用信息结构图进行文章结构知识的梳理(who, what, how





Step2 通过Skimming的阅读微技能寻找三个问题(Who was John Snow? Why cholera was called King at that time? How did cholera kill people?)的答案从而提取有关John Snowcholera的背景信息,与此同时,在语境中习得词汇: physician, expert, attend , exposed to, deadly disease, terrified outbreak, polluted water

Step 3 从上一步的最后一个问题How did cholera kill people?的答案polluted water设问:Who discovered the truth? How did he know it? 进入Careful-Reading的表格填空,表格要填的是每段的段落大意的重点词。引导学生在信息结构图简要地写好段落大意并思考每一段对应的科学步骤是什么?从而梳理出文章完整的结构信息图。完成学习理解类活动。

   Step 4 小组讨论(Q1:hy did John Snow mark information on the map? Q2: When John Snow found a sharp contrast in the death tolls between two neighboring streets, what did this evidence lead him to conclude? Q3: Did John Snow make his research results public the minute he found out that the polluted water might be to blame? Q4: What did he do instead? Q5:What personalities can you learn from him from this aspect?)通过四个问题的讨论进行深入语篇的分析与判断体现应用实践类活动,以及推断John Snow作为科学家的严谨的科学态度(strict,rigorous)体现了超越语篇的迁移创新活动类活动。
   Step 5 作业布置:1. Discuss the qualities of John Snow based on what he did, giving evidence to support their conclusion.
