词语辨析——institute、institution

今天我们来区分一下institute和institution，二者都有用作“机构”之意，但是侧重点和范围不同。 先看看词典中对二者的解释：
institution
a large important organization that has a particular purpose, for example, a university or bank （大学、银行等规模大的）机构——具有特定目的、大规模的机构，比如大学或银行


a building where people with special needs are taken care of, for example because they are old or mentally ill 慈善机构；社会福利机构——对具有特殊需求（比如年迈或精神疾病等）的人们提供照料服务的场所，例如慈善机构、社会福利机构
示例：financial institution 金融机构；medical institution 医疗机构


institute
an organization that has a pa
rticular purpose, especially one that is connected with education or a particular profession; the building used by this organization （教育、专业等）机构，机构建筑
——具有特定目的的机构，尤其是与教育或特定职业相关的机构
示例：a research institute 研究所
the National Cancer Institute. 国家癌症研究所


institute偏向于相对明确的名词，范围较小，重在学术研究之类的学院、团队
 institution是一个较抽象，用途更为广泛，重在制度、社会上的团体、机构，指代的范围更广。
所以在翻译过程中，我们要根据实际情况选择使用恰当的词语。
