“If somebody doesn’t believe Tesla’s going to
solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the
company,” CEO Elon Musk said
I'd say that Baglino's decision to sell $181 million of Tesla
stock makes it clear what his views are on Tesla's ability to
'solve autonomy'. It seems like a big vote of no
confidence.
Regarding the Japanese manufacturers -- yes, they could still
come back and be strong contenders in the EV market. But that is a
possibility, not a certainty. Regarding Toyota in particular, one
thing that I find very odd is that they are apparently planning to
come out with two different three-row SUVs as the next Toyota EVs.
Yeah, they sell a lot of Highlanders, so I understand their
interest in serving that market with an EV. But they sell even more
RAV4s and Camries, so why ignore those markets?

Regarding Toyota in particular, one thing that I find
very odd is that they are apparently planning to come out with two
different three-row SUVs as the next Toyota EVs. Yeah, they sell a
lot of Highlanders, so I understand their interest in serving that
market with an EV. But they sell even more RAV4s and Camries, so
why ignore those markets?
Currently, there's only a single non-luxury 3 row SUV in the Kia
EV9. Since the 2 row market is already saturated and their entry
(bZ4X) is uncompetitive, why not avoid most competition altogether?
Most automakers have canceled or delayed their plans for 3 row EVs
in the current sales climate, so there's likely only to be 1 or 2
competitors which means that a bZ4X quality car is far more viable.
Additionally, Toyota can tap into their strong truck/SUV fanbase
who have looked past some of Toyota's shortcomings in the segment
for quite a while. While I'd like to see more EV sedans, Hyundai,
Tesla and VW's entrants will likely be better than Toyota's attempt
and saturate the market in the US.

I don't think we need to read into things. If someone worked their
butt off for two decades,t hen wants to cash-out and sip Mai Tais
with their almost quarter billion dollar payout, that seems
perfectly reasonable. No need for conspiracy theories. The man is
set for life if he wants to just relax with his day now. You act
like that's an insane thing to do.

The current fall in EV demand has gifted the Japanese automakers a
much needed opportunity to catch up with the rest of the industry,
especially in the US/Canada. Competitive markets like China may
have already been lost, while regions like SE Asia, Central/South
America and Australia will depend on how fast the advanced
competition can gain market share as their EV markets ramp
up.
