PURPOSE OF THE HAZID STUDY
The overall purpose of Hazard Identification (HAZID)
is to focus the attention of the Project Team on:
a.
The impact of the facilities on their surroundings;
b.
The impact of the surroundings on the facilities;
c.
The interferences between main items;
d.
The general hazards.
A HAZID is
brainstorming exercise, guided
by a typical checklist
of this document and taking benefit
from the previous experience of the persons around the table.
While a HAZOP study is based on the examination of the
r
esponse of the process to abnormal process parameter
deviations, the HAZID study considers mainly the
non-process hazards and the hazards associated
with unwanted process releases.
The HAZOP examines what might happen
inside
the process, whilst the HAZID examines what might happen
outside the process.
In a HAZOP, the cause of a potentially hazardous event in
the process is Itemized and its effect recorded.
In a HAZID, the effect or possible consequences of an
incident are itemized and the possible causes are established and
recorded.
The HAZID must address the whole life cycle of the
installations, from construction to abandonment. It must address as
well the Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS).
A HAZID does not preclude the need for further hazard
assessment; instead, it is a precursor to subsequent hazard
analyses, and risk assessments, and is normally carried out during
the earliest project phases.
A HAZID is not an audit; Project Team members are invited
and welcome to Participate in the brainstorming exercise.
