Chapter 1
第一章
A Girl and a Match
小女孩和一根火柴
A shape moved through the dark streets.
一个身影穿过漆黑的街道。
It was terribly cold and it was snowing.
天气异常冷，空中还飘着雪花。
The shape slowly came closer.
身影慢慢走近了。
It wa
s a little girl.
那是个小女孩。
Her clothes were dirty, and she had no shoes.
她衣服脏兮兮的，而且还没穿鞋。
Some time ago she had slippers.
不久前她还有一双拖鞋可穿。
Unfortunately, she lost them.
但不幸的是，她把鞋弄丢了。
Her shoes were once her mother's.
那曾是她妈妈的鞋，
But they were so big.
可对她来说太大了。
One day, when she was running across a street, they fell off.
有一天，她跑着横穿马路时，把鞋跑丢了。
The snow was falling from the beautiful winter sky.
雪花从冬季美丽的夜空飘落。
It was New Year's Eve.
这是新年前夜。
The streets were almost empty now.
现在大街上几乎空无一人。
Everyone was inside their warm homes.
所有人都待在温暖的家里。
The little girl walked in the snow with bare feet.
小女孩赤着双脚走在雪地里。
In her hands, she was carring some matches.
手里拿着一些火柴。
Every day, she went out to sell matches.
她每天都要到外面卖火柴，
But today she didn't sell any.
然而今天她一点儿也没卖出去。
She was so cold but she couldn't go home.
她很冷，但却不能回家。
When she didn't sell any matches, her father would beat her.
如果她连一根火柴也没卖出去，父亲一定会打她的。
'Oh! I am so hungry,' she said.
“唉！我真的好饿啊。”她说。
'I want to eat something.
“真想吃点儿东西，
I'm so cold too,'
而且也太冷了。”
she thought.
她心里想着。
She walked past some houses.
她走过几栋房子。
Through the windows, she could see bright lights shining.
透过窗户，她可以看到里面灯火辉煌。
Then, she smelled some meat roasting.
这时，她闻到一阵烤肉的香味。
It was painful to her.
这对她来说真的很痛苦，
She was so hungry.
因为她已经饥肠辘辘了。
'I want to eat that delicious meat,' she thought.
“真想吃那香喷喷的肉啊，”她想，
'So many people are spending a wonderful time with their
families.
“很多人正和家人欢度没好的时光，
They are eating wonderful food.'
吃着美味的食物。”
On this terrible day, she found a corner and sat down.
在这恶劣的天气里，她找了一个角落坐下来。
She tried to warm herself.
她想让自己暖和一点儿，
But she only became colder.
结果却更冷了。
Her body was like ice.
她的身体冷得像冰一样。
She rubbed her hands together to make them warm.
她搓着双手来取暖，
It was useless.
但没有用。
'Ah! The matches,' she thought.
“啊！火柴，”她想，
'Just one!
“就点一根！
It will make my hands warmer.'
这会使我的手暖和起来。”
She took one match and struck it against the wall.
她拿出一根火柴，在墙上划了一下。
She was amazed.
她吃了一惊，
'Oh,
“呀，
it is so beautiful!'
真是太美了！”
she thought.
她想。
She felt the warmth from that one tiny match.
她感觉到这根细小的火柴散发着温暖。
Suddenly, everything became very strange.
忽然，一切都变得不同寻常了。
The little girl was in a new place.
小女孩来到了一个崭新的地方。
There was a large stove in front of her.
在她的面前出现了一个大大的火炉。
'What is this?' she asked.
“这是怎么回事？”她问道。
'This stove is so warm.'
“这火炉真暖和。”
She felt the warmth from that wonderful stove.
她感受着这美妙的火炉带来的温暖。
'I want to stay here forever.'
“我真想永远待在这儿。”
She put her hands closer to the stove.
她把手往火炉边凑近了些。
In a flash, everything was gone.
顷刻间，一切又都消失了。
She looked at her hand. In her hand was the burnt match.
她发现手中只剩燃尽的火柴，
She felt very disappointed.
心里失望极了。
Chapter 2
第二章
Journey to Paradise
去往天堂的旅程
'I will light another match,'
“我要再点一根火柴，”
she thought.
她想，
'Maybe the stove will come again.'
“或许火炉会再次出现。”
Again, the match sparkled like a diamond in the cold night
air.
在夜晚寒冷的空气里，火柴又一次如钻石般闪闪发光。
This time was very different.
而这次的景象截然不同。
She could see a wonderful room.
她看到一个漂亮的房间。
'Oh,
“啊！
how wonderful it is!'
多美呀！”
she cried out.
她惊呼起来。
There was elegant furniture.
房间里摆着很好的家具。
On the table was an amazing feast.
桌上摆着令人惊叹的宴席。
In the middle was a big goose.
中间是一只硕大的烤鹅，
The smell was mouth-watering.
那香味令人垂涎欲滴。
The little girl watched all of this.
小女孩看着眼前的一切。
'I want to eat the delicious food,'
“我想吃这些美味的食物，”
she thought.
她想，
'I want to sit in the elegant chairs.'
“我想坐在那些漂亮的椅子上。”
Suddenly the goose rolled toward the poor little girl.
突然，烤鹅朝这穷苦的小女孩滚了过来。
She tried to get it,
她想抓住它，
but it all disappeared.
但一切又都消失了。
There was nothing left but the burnt match.
除了燃尽的火柴，什么都没了。
Without thinking, she took another match
and lit it.
她毫不犹豫地又拿出一根火柴，点燃了它。
She wanted to see that wonderful sight again.
她想再次看到那每妙的景象。
This time, she was sitting under the most amazing Christmas
tree.
这次她坐在世上最美的圣诞树下，
This scene was so much better than any of the others.
这幅画面胜过了其它任何一个。
She wanted to touch one of the candles.
她想摸摸树上的一根蜡烛，
She lifted her hands toward the tree.
她把手伸向圣诞树，
But all the candles rose higher and higher.
然而所有的蜡烛都越升越高，
The candles became the stars.
变成了星星。
She watched one of them falling.
她看见其中一颗星星落了下来，
It made a fiery line in the sky.
在天空中划出一道长长的火光。
The little girl then thought of her grandmother.
这时小女孩想起了她的奶奶，
Her granny died many years ago.
她在很多年前就去世了。
She was the only person who was kind to the little girl.
奶奶是唯一对小女孩好的人。
'A person is dying somewhere,'
“有什么人快要死了，”
she whispered.
她喃喃自语道，
'Granny told me that.
“奶奶告诉过我，
When a star falls through the sky,
当天上有一颗星星陨落，
the person's soul goes up to heaven.'
地上就会有一个灵魂升上天堂。”
She felt very sad.
她很难过，
She missed her grandmother very much.
非常想念她的奶奶。
She immediately lit another match.
她立刻又燃起了一根火柴，
It was brighter than all of the other matches.
这根比其他任何一根都要明亮。
She watched the center of the light.
她望着火光的中心。
Slowly, the shape of her grandmother appeared.
渐渐地，奶奶的样子浮现出来，
Her face looked so gentle and kind.
她的脸是那么温和、慈祥。
'Granny!' she cried out.
“奶奶！”她叫了起来。
'I miss you so much!
“我太想你了。
I am so sad without you,
没有你，我很难过，
Please take me with you.
请带我走吧。
Don't disappear when the match goes out.
火柴熄灭时请别消失，
I don't want you to leave me again.'
我不想让你再离开我了。”
Then, the little girl had an idea.
这时小女孩有了一个主意，
She lit the rest of the matches.
她把剩下的所有火柴都点燃了。
The matches shone so brightly.
火柴发出明亮的光。
The grandmother took the little girl in her arms.
奶奶把小女孩搂在怀里。
The little girl felt safe with her grandmother now.
现在跟奶奶在一起，小女孩感到很安全。
They flew higher and higher into the air.
她们在空中越飞越高，
The grandmother took the little girl to paradise.
奶奶把小女孩带上了天堂。
In that place, the girl never felt cold again.
在那里，小女孩再也不会感到寒冷，
She never felt hungry or sad again.
再也不会饥饿或悲伤。
She could live happily with her loving grandmother.
她可以和她亲爱的奶奶快乐地生活在一起了。
