ANCIENT
MUSIC (Excerpt)
The origin of music can be traced back to a long time ago,
therefore it must not be disregarded. There are thrift and
extravagance, and there are uprightness and lusts. The positive
ones thrive, while the negative ones perish. In the ancient times
when Zhuxiang ruled the world, there were too many fads and the
Yang energy was accumulated. Things were scattered and unfettered,
so no fruits were borne. Therefore Shi Da developed a musical
instrument with five strings to collect the Yin energy and to
stabilize creat
ures. During the reign of Getian there was a special kind of music:
three people would hold the tail of an ox and step forward to sing
eight pieces: the first piece is called “to entertain the people”,
the second piece “black birds”, the third piece “to invigorate the
grass and trees”, the fourth piece “to stimulate the five corns”,
the fifth piece “to show respect to Heaven”, the sixth piece “to
express gratitude for the achievements of the emperor”, the seventh
piece “to defer to the grace of the earth”, and the eighth piece
“to summarize myriads of things”.
