美国哲学家拉尔夫.沃尔多.爱默生曾发明过一个叫“透明眼球”的说法，来阐释其超验思想：爱默生认为，人与自然之间的关系可以归纳为三层含义：1）使用、2）诗意、3）智慧，倡导人类通过与自然的接触，通过直觉(intuition)获得知识，而想要获得这种精神境界，人就需要和自然进行主动接触，爱默生将这种接触的过程称为超灵（oversoul），并用transparent eyeball做比喻，启发人们接触自然，获得思想上的提升：
