Dadawa (aka Zhu
Zheqin) is the first
contemporary Chinese diva to achieve worldwide stardom.
Dadawa is a native of Changsha,
Hunan. She has traveled China and the world extensively as both
a musician and
adventurer. She is considered to be the pioneer “indie” artist in
China, having independently produced her music, videos and films for over a
decade. Dadawa is the first Chinese
singer to be nominated for aPlanet Award at the
BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music
2007 with the release her latest
album, Seven Days (2006). “Seven Days” finished as a top-ten CD in China in
2006, a remarkable
accomplishment for an alternative music album in that market. Her work on this ground
breaking CD was recognized in 2006 by an MTV Asia award
for“Leading
Female Artist” and
the Tom.com award for “Most Influential Woman in Chinese
Music”. Backgrounder: The year 1995 was a milestone in the development of
Dadawa’s career. After holding a recital at the Royal Academy of Music, London, her
album “Sister Drum” was released in 56 countries
worldwideand
exceeded one million in sales outside of China, the first Chinese
recording to do so. UK’s Q
Magazine rated “Sister Drum” one of the top five world music albums
of the year.The
record also won Taiwan’s prestigious Golden Tripod music award for
“Best Album”. In
1996, Dadawa recorded the soundtrack for the movie “Chinese
Box” which won the Best Movie Soundtrackaward at the Venice Film
Festival. The
following year, her album “Voices from the Sky” was televised on
MTV in a simultaneous
premiere in eighty-one countries and for which she also won an
MTV Asia Video Award and MTV Asia Special Contribution Artist Award
in1997. In 1998, Dadawa wrote and recorded “Tear Lake”
with musical group The
Chieftains in Dublin. They performed together live at Carnegie
Hall, St. Patrick’s Day, 1999. In December 2000, Dadawa performed her concert, “Heavenly
Music for Sentient Beings” in Beijing. It was selected by UNESCO as the opening
cultural event of the International Year for Culture and
Peace. In their
Millenium edition, the Beijing Evening News hailed her as one of
10 leading cultural pioneers in the21st Century in
China. In January
2002, the Hong Kong Government invited Dadawa to write, produce
and perform her original
multimedia musical spectacle, “The Riddler”. In 2003, Dadawa was invited by CCTV and
HK’s Phoenix TV to be the host of the documentary series, “Into
Africa”. In 2004 in
Beijing, Dadawa premiered and recorded live her first in a series
of a collection of Asian classics, entitled “A New Ballad Aesthetic”, accompanied by
the Symphony Orchestra of the China National Opera House
(and to be performed again with
the Oshawa Symphony in January, 2007). In July 2005, Dadawa gave a
concert at Harbourfront
Centre, Toronto and recently toured China with her Toronto-based
band. In 2006, Dadawa
completed a collection of completely new contemporary works in the
album, “Seven Days” and
completed work on her related and first documentary film project,
“Sound Pilgrimage”, in collaboration with Oscar winner, Ross
Kauffman. She is
currently the visiting Artist in Residence at the Institute for
Asian Research at the University of British Columbia.
