The Stone Forest

Good morning, ladies & gentlemen, I’m your local guide. My name is Cui Xiongtao; because of my constellation I give myself English name Leo. Toady, we’re going to visit the Stone Forest. I guess that the Stone Forest is surely well known by most of you. Indeed, in China, people praise it as “the No.1 miracle in the country”. Now I’d like to show you the details about the Stone Forest.
br> The Stone Forest is located in the Stone Forest County which is attached to Kunming City. A very important minority group named Yi is living in the county It has 89 kilometers away from the downtown of Kunming. We now are going to drive across Chenggong County & Yiliang County. Now, we’re on the way to the Stone Forest and it will take 90minutes.
Now, we’re arriving in Chenggong County.It is about 17 kilometers away from the downtown of Kunming. The County is abundant of flower, fruit & vegetable. Nowadays flower production industry in the county has been developed rapidly. It has the largest cut-flowers exchange market in the region of the East & Southeast Asia.
Cut-flowers here are sold both domestic & abroad.
Please look outside of our bus. There’re 2 railways. The closest to us is the Yunnan- Viet Nam Railway which starts from Kunming and ends in Hanoi the capital of Viet Nam. It’s only 1 meter wide and 855 kilometers long, of which 465 kilometers are in Yunnan. The project was started in 1903 and completed in 1910. After France had occupied Vietnam, the French Government forced the Qin Government to approve the building of the road in order to monopolize the rich minerals of Yunnan. During the construction, about 300.000 Chinese laborers were employed. Because of the poor living conditions and poor treatment from the foreign overseers, more than 60.000 died in the course of construction. It was said to be the one of artificial miracles which is second to Panama Canal and Suez Canal. Another railway parallel to this one is the newly-built Nanning-Kunming Railway. It is 1.435meters wide (international standard) and 898 kilometers long, Connecting Kunming and Nanning of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous District. It’s a completely electrified one and was opened to traffic in December 1997.The railway is the main access from Southwest China to the sea.
Ladies and Gentleman, here we are in the Stone Forest County now, A branch of Yi people named Sa’ni are living in such a fantastic place from generation to generation,
In fact, stone forest is a unique landform. In the field of international geology, it was called a Karst landform. Karst is a plateau liking the Northwest of Slovenia and Northeast of Italy, where the typical Karst landform has been formed. Karst landform refers to the soluble rock on the earth surface which has been dissolved by water and has resulted in such phenomena as corrosion, sediment, collapse subsidence and accumulation.
Such a unique landform takes its shape. There are stone forests, stone peaks, stalagmites, dolines, and underground rivers, and so on. The Stone Forest of Kunming is the best developed and most beautiful one.
Entering the entrance of the Stone Forest, we would certainly be amazed by the vividly shaped stones like fresh lotus, fighter’s sword, kissing birds, flying phoenix, and big mushroom. One of the stones is the most famous, which was called Ashima. It looks like a Sa’ni girl. She was praised highly in the fairytales of Sa’ni people. A story of her goes like this, long ago, Ashima was falling in love with a handsome Sa’ni boy named A’Hei, because of persecution from another bad guy named Rebubala. The loves couldn’t get together at last. So, it’s called a story of Romeo and Juliet in the Stone Forest.
