there has been built many skyscrapers these recent years,
Mostof them
following the western aesthetic. Why? M: Many towers
have been erected without a soul. I want to believe that we in an
epoch of transition. But, the truth is we don’t know
where. l:What would be your alternative to this
time? M: We should go to a
more transitory architecture, and build thinking that buildings
will not last forever. l:Are you talking about that we should build
ephemeral skyscrapers, throwaway? M:I understand that this concept clashes with the Western
mind. But in China the idea of indefinite has less weight. What I mean is that here
(in west), each generation believes that is better than its
predecessor, and better than the next one. That everything they do is
what should remain. This idea deprives us of the future.China is
good ground for experimentation. We should take, this chance to
reinvent architecture. l:Why are not built in China more
skyscrapers reflecting clearly the local
tradition? M:Many of those who build towers, have not
studied the essence of our society. I try to go to the
heartofChinese values, looking for inspiration. But
that's rare. In many Chinese new buildings there has
beena diabolical entente among the worst of East and the
worst of the West: I would qualify that as a criminal
association. l:How to do
better? M:Western architects prefer to act
individually. In China, the working way includes extensive
professional platforms, combining and exchanging knowledge.
Architecture may be the result of dialogue that a particular
criterion. l:What is appreciated architects there
Western? M: About Spanish
architects,we appreciate their attention to detail, their ability
to combine materials and the quality of their design.I will also
tell you what we do not appreciate:their tendency to design houses
ascubes. I do not understand. You have you wonderful
architects,like
Antoni Gaudí, who produced sensual forms. l:What we must attribute your inclination for
the sensual? M: The poetry and the
visual arts have still an important role in the formation of the
sensitivity of Chinese citizens. The cubes are too abstract for
us. l:You have lived between China and EE.UU. What
about the architecture done in the
U.S.? M: I do not like the
architectural practice in the EE.UU, it can be devastating, and not
only in economic terms. It must be reformulated. I preach an
architecture that should be social motor, not a market order, not a
tool serving the market, as happens in the States. We can
restructure our profession or we surrender right to the market. If
not react to the harassment of the industry and software we will
lose our own space. l:And what about the architecture
China? M: It has
possibilities. I am no longer presenting myself there as an
architect, but as a design developer.I use my knowledge in design
in order to propose projects to attract
investors. l:Would you say to young Spanish
architects that China is a land of opportunities?
M:Yes , for two reasons . There are many buildings
to be constructed . And here the architects are well formed. If you
go to China, will to invest in time and attitude; and quickly
become familiar with our customs. l:What are your favorite buildings in
China? M:The China Television
Tower raised by the Dutchman Rem Koolhaas, the Capital Tower in
Beijing, and a house in Xian designed by my
father. l:Is your father an architect?
M:No. He was a tailor. But
as he told me once, 'your dress is the first layer of
architecture.
