北卡早先别名为老北州（Old North State），出产柏油（tar），沥青，松脂。
南北战争的一场激战中，北卡部队的援军们支持不住，落荒而逃。但北卡的子弟兵们坚守不退并赢得了最后的胜利。
凯旋途中，那些逃兵问：“你们老北州还有柏油吗？”
