（颜渊篇12.08）


棘子成曰：“矣，何以文为？”子贡曰：“惜乎夫子之说君子也！驷不及舌。文犹质也，质犹文也，虎豹之鞟犹犬羊之鞟。”
【今译】
棘子成说：“君子只要具有好的品质就行了，要那些表面的仪式干什么呢？”子贡说：“真遗
憾，夫子您这样谈论君子。一言既出，驷马难追。本质就像文采，文采就像本质，都是同等重要的。去掉了毛的虎、豹皮，就如同去掉了毛的犬、羊皮一样。”
【英译】
Chi Tsze-ch'ang said, 'In a superior man it is only the substantial qualities which are wanted;-why should we seek for ornamental accomplishments?'Tsze-kung said, 'Alas! Your words, sir, show you to be a superior man, but four horses cannot overtake the tongue. Ornament is as substance; substance is as ornament. The hide of a tiger or a leopard stripped of its hair, is like the hide of a dog or a goat stripped of its hair.'
