【内容】这跟田中芳树的《银河英雄传说》同属“未来历史小说”，但阿西莫夫写的不是演义，绝大部分情节都是以人物对话展现，重思想谋略，而行动甚少，所以不如五爷当年一口气读完几百万字的《银英传》那么荡气回肠，估计也很难拍成“星球大战”之类的电影。正如Jams Gunn的评论：'Action and romance have little to do with the success of the Trilogy – virtually all the action takes place offstage, and the romance is almost invisible – but the stories provide a detective-story fascination with the permutations and reversals of ideas.'
但《基地》的江湖地位远在《银英传》之上，讲的是银河帝国崩盘之际，有个“心理历史学家”提出建立一个保存人类科学文明的星球基地，然后这个基地的人如何解决发展历程上外星入侵等危机，方法是合纵连横、宗教控制、商业控制。
《基地》后面还有很多续集，五爷没有一一拜读，而只读了这本原版——当年在北大的地摊胡乱买的，放了很多年才知道这是科幻小说中的圣经级作品。
此书生词可能偏多一点，但阅读难度不是单词，而是基地的历史发展故事分成相隔几十年一段段写，分别是Hari Seldon创建时代、Salvor Hardin市长时代、Limmar Ponyets商人时代、Hober Mallow市长时代，分别相隔几十年，人物除了历史传承没有直接情节关系，其实当年Foundation在杂志Astounding上是按一个个短篇故事刊出的，因此可以把此书看成短篇小说集，每个新故事的人物都是全新系列的，需要重头适应，因此初时有些不知所云，不太推荐对科幻不太感兴趣的透析菜鸟阅读。（详见透析理论关于读长篇比读短篇容易的论述）。
