文学翻译也许是所有科目中最难翻译的科目，而诗歌翻译又是文学翻译中最难的一种。翻译家泰德礼说过，除非诗人，不可译诗。美国诗人佛罗斯特也说过，诗在翻译中丢失。可以说，诗歌翻译是一件得不偿失的苦差事，最优秀的诗歌翻译家，其译作也无法做到无可挑剔。在诗歌翻译中，笔者遵循形神一体，也就是说，如果原诗是一首格律诗，译作除了准确地以诗的语言表达出原诗的意义，还必须把格律表现出来，好让不懂外语的读者知道原诗的形体与神韵。仅仅把诗意译出是不难的，正如只把格律表现出来一样。下面是“A Red, Red Rose” 的翻译与比较：
