2012-5-31 in/ at/ on the corner

John: Oh, OK. I know where that is. There's a new hotel on the corner.

印象中一般用at the corner(表示把拐角处看做一个点),用in the corner(在角落里面),on the corner到底表示什么含义呢?

1.
'At' tends to refer to a location; 'on' tends to refer to a position. If the position is in the location, we can use either. 'At the corner' and 'on the corner' are sometimes/often interchangeable. We usually stand 'on' the corner, not 'at' the corner. But we meet 'at the corner' (location) or 'on the corner' (position).

2.
Being in a corner is more enclosed, like if you are in the corner of a room. Being on a corner is more exposed, like standing on the corner of one street and another.
3.
We say 'in the corner of a room', but 'at the corner (or 'on the corner') of a street'.

综合看来,on the corner和at the corner是常常可以互换的。

at the corner of the street就是把corner of the street和周围的商店、十字路口等地点平等地看做空间里面看做分量相同的不同的点,忽略各点在大小和高低上的区别。

on: 二维
on the corner of the street指“在有横向有纵向两维的街角的表面上”
in:三维
in the corner of the room指“在具有长宽高空间的墙角区域之内”
