If there is a building which symbolizes a
country-such as the Eiffel Tower for France and Sydney Opera House
for Australia-then it has to be the Taj Mahal(太姬陵) for India.
It was set up by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1653 in memory of his wife,
Mumtaz Mahal. From the time they got married, they wouldn’t be
separated. She followed him to wars, advised him on affairs of
state, and was loved by his people for her good work. But she died
in 1631 during childbirth. The emperor was heartbroken and had the
Taj Mahal built as a sign of his love.
It took more than 20years for the Taj to be built. Workers were
brought in, not only from all over India, but from central Asia
too. A total of 20,000 people worked on the building.
In 1657, Shah Jahan fell ill and in 1658 his son, Aurangzeb,
imprisoned(囚禁) his father and seized power. Shah Jahan stayed in
prison until his death in 1666. He was finally buried there with
his wife he could never forget.
The Taj is definitely worth more than a single visit. As it is
built with white marble(大理石) stones, its character changes in
different lights. It looks more beautiful at sunrise and sunset. At
sunset, for example, the color of the Taj changes from white to
yellow, then to pink. As the moon rises, it turns a silvery
white.
To show respect to the Taj, tourists are asked to take off their
shoes during their visit.

Asia.

GR8 news-txt MSGS rnow in the COD. Confused? Help is at hand. It
means “Great News-text messages are now in the Concise oxford
Dictionary.” In Britain alone, more than one million mobile phone
text messages are sent every hour, so the Concise Oxford Dictionary
has decided to include the shorthand(速记) language in its revised
edition published on Thursday.
SMS, or short messaging service, has been given its own
appendix(附录). The section features dozens of examples of the
abhbreviations(缩写词) which have become a second language to millions
of young people.
“We have been monitoring the remarkable growth of text messages
with great attention: its influence is now such that we felt it was
time to treat it as an internal(必备) part of English,” said the
dictionary’s publishing manager, Judy Pearsall.
Examples that have found a place in the dictionary include BBLR (be
back later) and HAND (have a nice day). They are joined by
so-called emotions-representations of facial expression such as :-)
and :-(.
The latest edition also includes new words judged to have entered
everyday conversational use.
Minger, meaning “an unattractive or unpleasant person” makes an
entry, along with chowhound, defined by the dictionary as “a greedy
person”, and tweenies, “children trying to appear older than they
are.”

It’s great to go on vacation, but it’s also nice to come home.
Migrating(迁徙) birds seem to feel the same way. Birds such as
black-tailed godwits(黑尾塍鹬), a migrating bird that can be found in
Europe, Asia, north Africa and north Australia, fly south every
winter. Then, they return home to spend the summer months with
their life long partners.
Now, scientists have found, pairs of godwits often return to their
summer breeding(繁殖) grounds within three days of each other, even
though they spend the entire winter apart. It’s as if they arranged
the date that they would meet up again.
Researchers in England, put colored leg bands on the birds. Then,
they asked bird watchers around Europe to report by email when and
where they saw the birds during the winter.
The simplest way for birds to return at the same time would be to
spend the winter together. After all, if they’re in different
places, they can’t call each other on the phone and talk about when
they’ll meet again.
But, the survey(调查) found that couples usually spent their winters
in different countries up to 1,000 kilometers apart. One male, for
example, spent the winter on the coast of Ireland while his mate
was in France.
There findings are important for protecting the birds, scientists
say. Black-tailed godwits live for up to 25 years. They spend their
summers in Iceland, where they mate, but they spread all over other
parts of Europe in winter. Once a pair mates, there’s a 90% chance
that they’ll return to mate with each other again the next year.
So, protection of their wide web of holiday destinations(目的地) is
very important.
How do the birds arrange their date of return? Unless scientists
find their feathered cell phones, that question will remain a
mystery.
64.We can find godwits in quite a lot of places except
___________.
A.America B.Europe C.Africa
D.Asia
65.What did the scientists discover about godwits?
A.Godwits are a kind migrating bird.
B.Godwits spend the entire winter apart.
C.Godwits arrange the date that they will meet up
again.
D.Pairs of godwits return to their breeding grounds within
three days of each other.
66.How did the researchers in England do the research?
A.By serving as bird watchers around Europe.
B.By putting coloured leg bands on the birds.
C.By tracking(跟踪) the birds all the way.
D.By colouring the birds feather.
67.Why are the findings of the survey important?
A.To help people observe them.
B.To help godwits find their mates.
C.To help them to find their destination.
D.To help people protect their habitats.
68.What does the underlined sentence “Unless scientists find their
feathered cell phones, that question will remain a mystery.”
mean?
A.It is still unknown what kind of feathered cell phone
godwits have.
B.Scientists have known how the birds arrange their date of
return.
C.It remains unknown how the birds arrange their date of
return.
D.It is amazing that godwits have feathered cell
phones.

A recent study by British scientists shows that a bit of classical
music can make people buy more expensive food at the
restaurant.
The scientists asked a restaurant to alternate silence, pop and
classical music on different nights over 18 days. They find that on
nights when the classics were playing-a tape of Beethoven, Mozart
and Bach-customers spent more on dinner, especially on luxurious
(=very fine and expensive) food such as coffee, dessert, fine wines
and starters.
The scientists say classical music makes people feel more cultured
and sophisticated(有教养的), and so they are more likely to buy the
food they thought of together with the high life.
69.What does the underlined word “alternate” in the 2nd paragraph
mean?
A.Join sth. together. B.Make sth. happen by
turns.
C.Use sth. in separate places. D.Offer sth. as
entertainment(娱乐)
70.Which was a possible fact that took place in the restaurant on
one of the 18 nights?
A.No music was played at all for the whole night.
B.Pop and classical music were played in turns.
C.Different customers heard different music.
D.Silence, pop and classical music followed one
another.
71.Why did the customers spend more with a bit of classical
music?
A.Because they believed high society life should include
luxurious food.
B.Because they had to pay for the music as well as the
food.
C.Because classical music made them feel like eating
more.
D.Because music by Beethoven, Mozart and Bach was all about
eating.

While renting cars or hiring baby-sitters is common, few people
probably have considered hiring thieves.
A company in Shandong Province is advertising just that. Xinsheng,
one of many leasing(出租) companies in Qingdao, has a plan to “lease
thieves”, who are played by its employees.
“We provide ‘thieves’ to shopkeepers and have them caught by
security guards(保安) on the spot as a warning to real thieves in
their stores,” said Ms Yang, head of the company’s service
department.
“Our thieves will obey the security guards and be paraded through,
for example, a large shopping center after being caught. They will
do whatever the guards order them to do.”
The 20-something woman of Xinsheng visited a Carrefour supermarket
to offer the business early last week when it first opened. But the
security guards didn’t seem to quite catch her at first. When they
finally understood, they simply looked at each other blankly in
astonishment(惊讶).
Yet Yang was confident about the business prospects(前景) even though
the company had only two to three “thieves”-all members of her
family.
The company charged 300 yuan (US $ 36) for a show of one “thief”
per hour and 200 more for the “public parade.”
“Our guard-and-thief show can be used in public areas like
department stores, supermarkets, libraries and hospitals.”
But most companies said they were not interested when asked about
the service.
“This show cannot be done,” said a company director, who refused to
be named, in one of Qingdao’s shopping centers.
Although the shopping center suffers losses of more than 1 million
yuan in stolen goods every year, he said the management was afraid
they could not face the consequences (后果) if such a trick was made
known to the public.
72.People can learn from Xinsheng’s advertisement that the company
wants to ________.
A.help train shop security guards B.have its
employees hired
C.hire baby-sitters good at stealing D.hire skilled
thieves
73.What Xinsheng is trying to do is based on the idea that
_________.
A.thieves are afraid of being caught
B.customers enjoy seeing thieves being caught
C.thieves must be good at catching others stealing
D.security guards sometimes work together with thieves
74.What can we infer(推断) from the passage?
A.Ms Yang is too skilled a thief for the guars to
catch.
B.Ms Yang has never put on a “guard-and-thief” show so
far.
C.Ms Yang hasn’t got enough employees for her
business.
D.Ms Yang doesn’t seem to mind what the companies say.
75.What do most companies think of Ms Yang’s service?
A.It is against the law. B.It won’t be helpful
C.It can’t be kept secret. D.it costs too much.

第三节 书面表达
One possible version:
Dear Mr Li,
Recently we have had a discussion about having desk mates of the
different sex. Some students don’t agree. They think the boys are
naughty, noisy and sometimes rude. While the girls are gentle,
kind-hearted and lovely. If boys sit next to girls, it is hard to
get on well with each other. They also say teenagers cannot control
themselves very well. If a boy and a girl become desk mates, they
may become closer and develop feelings for each other, which does
no good to their study. At the same time, others believe boys and
girls should be desk mates. Everyone has his or her own good
points. Boys are usually good at science, while girls often do well
in the arts. They can overcome their weakness by learning from
others’ strong points. They say there can be a pure friendship
between boys and girls.

Li Hua

注意:
