(8
syllable, iambic foot with rhymes)
A sea of fireworks 'n lantern
light,
Every adorned moat bridge
unlocks;
Gone with horse hoofs the
dust in flight,
With bright moon above come
the flocks.
The geisha dressed 'n
gorgeous they are,
Strolling and sing the Mumes
Fall chime;
The city guards lift curfew
bar,
Jade clepsydra, haste not
the time.
(Mar 22, 2011, revised Mar 24)
(12 syllable, abab
cdcd:)
A
sea of lantern lit trees ‘n fireworks silver
bright
The festive light
embellished moat-bridge each unlocks
With horse hoofs the dust in
the darkness gone in flight
The bright moon follows the
people coming in flocks
The roving girl minstrels
dressed so gorgeous they are
All strolling the streets
singing but the Mumes Fall song
The capital guards lift
every night curfew bar
O, jade clepsydra, don’t
hustle the time along
(10 syllable:)
The lanterns lit trees merge
with fireworks bright
The fest light adorned
moat-bridge each unlocks
With horse hoofs the dust in
dark gone in flight
The bright moon follows
crowds coming in flocks
So gorgeously dressed the
girl singers are
Strolling and singing but
the Mumes Fall song
The city guards lift every
curfew bar
Jade clepsydra, don’t haste
the time along
Note:
1.
moat bridges refer to bridges over the moat going around the
capital city. Some of the bridges were built with locks that
control the uplifting to block the route into the
city.
2.
Mumes Fall is one of the tunes in Yuefu songs
of the Han Dynasty, which is a collection of folk songs and lyrics,
and later new styles and words were added. Some poets composed
verses to this tune. The vertical Chinese bamboo flute is one of
the common musical instruments, but for this particular Mumes Fall
tune, a bamboo fife is used instead.
3.
clepsydra is a kind of timer, or calculagraph in ancient
times. It works in similar way with a sandglass.
