Tune: “A RIVERSIDE
TOWN”
DREAMING OF MY DECEASED WIFE ON
THE NIGHT OF THE 20TH DAY OF THE IST MOON, 1075
For ten long years the living
of the dead knows nought.
Though to my mind not
brought,
Could the dead be
forgot?
Her lonely grave is far, a
thousand miles away.
To whom can I my grief
convey?
Revived, e’en if she be, oh,
could she still know me?
My face is worn with
care
And frosted is my
hair.
Last night I dreamed of coming
to our native place;
She's making up her
face
Before her mirror with
grace.
Each the other
hushed,
But from our eyes tears
gushed.
When I am woken, oh, I know
I'll be heart-broken
Each night when the moon
shines
O'er her grave clad with
pines.

徐忠杰译文:
Jiangchengzi
Ten long years have left me
still in a maze.
Between us is an
impenetrable haze.
To my mind
have
constantly come thoughts
of you:
Things I can't forget,
loving you as I do.
Your
grave, lonely, thousands of li away.
Nowhere to tell my grief,
care as I may.
Had we had a chance to
each other see.
By no means would you
have recognized me.
My face is overspread
with dust and soot;
Hair on my temples ---
white as frost, to boot.
At night, I dream I was
back to our country town.
There, I saw you, by the
window, sitting down.
With your quiet
dignified, lovable air.
Engaged in dressing, with
grace and ease, your hair.
Face to face, we were
dumb; or so it seems.
Not a word, but tears
flowing down in streams.
Each year, without you,
I'd be in deep grief ---
Against moonlight, your
grove mound --- in bold relief.
