第二部分
阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下面四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。
A
Some people bring out the best in you in a way that
you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of
those people.
My father died when I was nine
months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen.
While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little
money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on
her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons,
you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life
if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car
and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother
spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter
what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to. She
drove that message so deep onto my heart that I finally believed
her. A year later, I returned to
school—walking on my own!
When the Great
Depression(大萧条)hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the
both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor
again.
Over the years, I experienced
various levels of business success. But the real turning point
occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I
was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for
families and was angry that they charged an extra $2for each child.
That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my
wife tat I was going to open a
motel(汽车旅馆)for families that would never charge extra for children.
There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mom was one
of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even
designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot
of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul,
I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the
largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759
inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1billion a
year.
You may not have started out
life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life
worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop
you.
46. What caused Kemmons to
start a motel by himself?
A. His previous business
success.
B. His terrible experience in
the hotel.
C. Loving, supportive and
strong-willed.
D. Strict, sensitive and
supportive.
47. Which of the following best
describes Kemmons’ mother?
A. Modest, helpful, and
hard-working.
B. Careful, helpful and
beautiful.
C. Loving, supportive and
strong-willed.
D. Strict, sensitive and
supportive.
48. Which of the following led
to Kemmons’ success according to the passage?
A. A poor family, higher
education, self-confidence and hard work.
B. Mom’s encouragement, a poor
family, higher education, and opportunities.
C. Mom’s encouragement, a poor
family, higher education, and clear goals.
D. Mom’s encouragement, clear
goals, self-confidence and hard work.

Claude Monet was born on
November 14, 1840, in Paris, but he spent most of his childhood in
Le Havre, a city of southern France. By the time he was fifteen
Monet had become popular as a
caricaturist(漫画家). Through an exhibition of his drawings at a local frame
shop in 1858, Monet met the French landscape painter Eugene Louis
Boudin, who introduced Monet to outdoor painting, an activity that
soon became his life’s work.
By 1859 Monet had committed
himself to a career as an artist and began to spend as much time in
Pairs as possible. During the 1860s he met Edouard Manet. With
other ambitious French painters, they formed the impressionist
school.
Working outside, Monet painted
simple landscapes and he began to have some success. As his style
developed, however, Monet broke one traditional artistic
convention(常规)after another. His experiments with bright color became
more and more daring, and he seemed to cut himself off from the
possibility of a successful career as a conventional painter
supported by the art establishment.
In 1874 Monet and his
colleagues decided to organize their own exhibition. They called
themselves independents, but the press soon labeled them
impressionists because one of Monet’s paintings had borne the title
Impression: Sunrise. Then the name stuck.
By the mid-1880s , Monet ,
generally regarded as the leader of the impressionist school, had
achieved significant recognition and financial security. In 1890 he
was able to purchase some property in the village of Giverny, not
far from Paris, and there be began to construct a water
garden—a
water lily pond with a Japanese bridge. Beginning in 1906,
paintings of the pond and the water lilies occupied his mind for
the rest of his life. His famous series Water Lilies, painted
between 1990 and 1926, Clearly shows the artist’s strong interest
in color and produces a
remarkable(不寻常的)visual effect. Despite failing eyesight, Monet continued
to paint almost up to the time of his death, on December 5,1926, at
Giverny.

C
Every parent wants their child
to grow up to enjoy life and be successful. Each and every one of
us has something that we don’t want our children to experience as
they get older. We protect them hoping they will never experience
hurt, yet as they get older they come across their own
struggles.
We often do everything we can
to keep them from making the mistakes that we have made. Your
children are not you. They are incredible little beings that choose
you to experience life with. They are not little “mini me’s” that
will make the same mistakes we have made or learn the way we learn
from our own experiences. They go to school, have experiences that
they only tell us about, and understand the experiences through
their own thoughts and feelings mixed in with family behavioral
patterns. This is where you can make a difference. Be an
example.
Teach your child how to live
life by being the person you would want them to
be—helping
others, loving yourself and making no judgments about other people.
As you learn this in your own self and apply it, your child won’t
need you to speak a word. If little Joannie doesn’t want to share
with another child, show them how to share. Show by
example.
If you don’t want other to
walk all over you, treat others as you want to be treated
because there is a child learning behaviors from you. Be the
example of what you want your child to be through your own positive
thoughts and feelings. It is the best thing you can do for your
child and yourself to ensure your child feel accepted and loved as
they get older.
53. We can infer from the
second paragraph that
.
A. children are likely to make
mistakes their parents made
B. children don’t want to spend
time with their family
C. children are like their
parents in many ways
D. children base their actions
on their thoughts
54. The underlined phrase “walk
all over you” in the last paragraph probably means “
”.
A. see your
weaknesses
B. know your
thoughts
C. learn your
secrets
D. treat you badly
55. In the passage, the author
expresses
.
A. his concern for the role
parents play in families
B. his support for children’s
independence
C. his wonder at the
potential(潜力)of children
D. his surprise at parents’
stubbornness
56. Which of the following will
be the best title for the passage?
A. Make no judgments about
others
B. Be the example in your
child’s life
C. Treat others as you want to
be treated
D. Keep your child from making
your mistakes
D
Rare birds in the UK have been
living far better than the more common birds over the last decade
due to the efforts of conservation organizations, according to a
new assessment.
The research shows almost 60%of
the 63 rare birds that live in the UK have increased over the last
10 years.
By contrast, only about one
third of common species have increased over the same period,
compared with four out of every 10 common birds. The rare birds
described in the assessment with increasing populations include the
osprey and corncrake. All of these birds are subject to
conservation action.
The declining common birds
include the nightingale, swift, house sparrow and red grouse. These
are suffering declines for a variety of reasons, including changes
in farming practices.
Dr David Noble, from the
British Trust for Ornithology,
said:“That
some of our rarer birds have responded to targeted conservation
action is great news. It shows just what can be
achieved.
What we need to do now is to
continue the good work and use some of the lessons we have learned
to help our more common birds.”
Dr Mark Avery, the conservation
director of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds(RSPB),
said:“Over
the last decade we’ve enjoyed some great conservation successes,
including removing some threatened species from the World
Conservation Union’s Red List of Threatened Animals and increasing
the populations of red kite, osprey, etc. However, these successes
are countered(抵消)by continued declines of some wide spread
species.”
The overview of 210 native
birds has been produced by a group of conservation organizations,
to mark the publication of The State of the UK’s Birds report,
which is in its 10th year. The report was published by
the RSPB for a group of conservation organizations.
57. Which of the following is
TRUE according to the passage?
A. The decline of widespread
birds is not worrying for the UK.
B. The UK has got some
practical experience of bird conservation.
C. Changes in farming practices
contribute to the increase of rare birds.
D. Half of common birds have
decreased in the past ten years in the UK.
58. We can learn from the
passage that Dr David Noble
.
A. hopes that conservation
organizations will change the way they work
B. is quite disappointed with
the result of the new assessment
C. is losing confidence in
conservation organizations’ action
D. has high hopes for the
increase in bird population in Britain
59. Which of the following can
best explain Dr Mark Avery’s words?
A. The UK should not be
satisfied with what they have achieved.
B. The UK should share their
experience with other countries.
C. What conservation
organizations do is far from satisfactory.
D. The RSPB is responsible for
the decrease of common birds.
60. The author’s purpose of
writing this article is to tell people
.
A. some good ways to protect
rare birds
B. the differences between rare
birds and common birds
C. the number of rare birds has
increased over the last decade
D. some widespread birds in the
UK are in great need of help
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从下框的A—F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。
A.
Why to turn to alternative
energy
B.
How to use renewable
energy
C.
The sources of renewable energy
D.
What is renewable
energy?
E.
Where is the solar energy from?
F.
The advantages of renewable energy
61.
When speaking about renewable
energy, we are talking about power which gets its energy, we are
talking about power which gets its energy from resources which will
not be diminished from the use. Renewable energy is a substitute
for the nonrenewable energy of fossil fuel.
62.
One fundamental advantage of renewable energy, and
environmentalists’ favorite reason to promote its use, is that
there are no greenhouse gases or other pollutants that give out as
there are with the burning of fossil fuels. Renewable energy, or
solar, water and wind power, are certainly not new although they
have received much attention recently because they will not cause
pollution. Environmentally friendly power sources such as wind,
solar and water power have been used in both developing and
developed countries for a long time because they are cheap and
clean, but they have yet to be used as a primary source of energy
for any big urban area.
63.
The generation of power from
renewable energy sources has become somewhat more common in recent
times as people have increasingly become aware of issues such as
climate change due to fossil fuel by products and the political or
social worries about nuclear power. There are numerous countries
and non-profit, environmentally conscious organizations that are
supporting the use of renewable energy.
64.
The flow of renewable energy
has to do with naturally occurring phenomena. Tides, sunlight, wind
and heat are all created by geothermal events and all are sources
of energy. Each of these sources of energy has unique
characteristics related to where and how we can use
them.
65.
Most technology which
transforms renewable energy into power which we can use is solar
powered either directly or indirectly. The atmospheric system of
the earth keeps balance so that the heat which spreads out into
space is equal to the amount of radiation received from the sun.
The quantity of energy contained in the atmosphere approximates the
earth’s climate. The bodies of water of the earth, or its
hydrosphere, absorb much of the radiation which is received from
the sun. And much of that absorbed radiation is in the lower
latitudes surrounding the equator.
