NORDISK TEATERLABORATORIUM / ODIN TEATRET was
founded in Oslo in 1964 and has been based in Holstebro since 1966.
Since 1984 it has had the status of a self-governing institution.
The permanent salaried staff, including actors, technicians and
administration, consists of eighteen people.
The Board of Directors is made up of S鴕en
Kjems (chairman), Kirsten Justesen, Per Kofod, Peter Laugesen and
Bj鴕n Lense-M鴏ler. Eugenio Barba and the actors Julia Varley and
Torgeir Wethal participate in board meetings as observers without
the right to vote. Eugenio Barba has been Odin Teatret’s director
since its founding. Board members are unpaid.
Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium/Odin Teatret
receives an annual grant from the Ministry of Culture for the
purpose of further education and theatre research. Since 1980 it
has also received an annual municipal grant as a regional theatre
in Holstebro. A consi
derable part of the institution’s work is, however, financed by
Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium / Odin Teatret itself through its
activities in Denmark and abroad.
Pedagogy:
learning to learn
Pedagogical activity takes the form of
practical courses, meetings, seminars and conferences in Holstebro
or elsewhere.
In our sites Calendar of Activities you will
be informed when and where Odin Teatret's actors are giving
seminars.
* Teaching as unlearning (further education):
Courses with specific characteristics intended for actors,
directors or theatre groups (e.g.: 'Vindenes Bro', 'The Secret
Dance', 'The Eurasian Theatre University').
* Seminars for actors, directors, dancers,
choreographers, sociologists, cultural workers (e.g.: 'The Odin
Week').
* Theoretical and practical symposiums for
universities.
* Longer courses for actors/directors from
particular cultural-geographical regions.
Performances
confrontation and transfer of
energy
It usually takes many months to prepare a
performance. Its artistic-political purpose is to be integrated
into various contexts of the polis (community) such
as:
* Traditional theatre
venues.
* Areas or milieus where theatre is
unusual.
* Street or open air.
* Socially discriminated areas (e.g. prisons,
psychiatric hospitals, occupied
* buildings, refugee camps, minority
enclaves).
* The placing of a performance in a specific
context gives it its special artistic energy and political
value.
Transformances:
turbulence which becomes identity
awareness
Transformance is a performative process which
involves an entire milieu or community.
Theatre becomes the active force that can
revitalise a community, uncovering the hidden bonds as well as the
socialising cultural processes which characterise it. The
designation professional/non-professional is erased. The
multiplicity of subcultures becomes visible as they present
themselves to each other.
Transformance can take several
forms:
* Barter. Its essence is reciprocal
presentation. Through barter, Odin Teatret enters into direct
dialogue with a group or a local community by means of an exchange
of song, dance, sketches, improvisations and other cultural
activities. It can take place in a village, a neighbourhood, a
school, a prison or a refugee camp.
* Parade. By means of a planned yet unexpected
theatre procession through a particular area, spectators are drawn
into a spontaneous gathering
* Holstebro Festuge (Festive Week). This is a
festival based on an active collaboration between local
institutions and associations which do not normally interact or
have contact with one another, such as cultural and social
institutions, museums, schools, sports clubs, grass roots
movements, churches, the army, ecological groups, community
centres, restaurants, banks, shops and factories. This event is
always built around a specific theme e.g.: 'The Danish Columbus' in
1991, 'Mixed Marriages' in 1993, 'At the World’s End' in
1998.
* Transit Festival. An international
festival/encounter based on an exchange of experiences. It is
structured around a theme with ensembles, performers and scholars
who present performances, working methods and artistic/political
visions.
* Special projects whose aim is to create and
strengthen relations among local
* communities, minorities and professional
groups.
Research:
multicultural and interdisciplinary
network
This research is concentrated on a continual
study of the actor/dancer’s scenic language. It takes place in the
daily training of Odin Teatret’s actors. It is further developed
through ISTA - International School of Theatre Anthropology - and
the University of Eurasian Theatre where it is entrusted to a
permanent network of about sixty artists and university researchers
from different geographical areas, traditions and
genres.
* International sessions of a longer duration
with up to 400 selected participants.
* Closed research sessions with a limited
number of participants.
* Larger theoretical symposiums, accompanied
by work demonstrations and performances.
* The creation of a permanent ensemble -
Theatrum Mundi - with actors, dancers and musicians from African,
Asian and Euro-American traditions.
Diffusion:
professional hospitality and
curiosity
* The presentation of the working methods of
individual artists or groups.Performances from other genres and
traditions. The publication and distribution of theoretical and
practical books and magazines (see further details at our site Odin
Teatret's Publishing House).A collection of films and videos on
training and performances by Odin Teatret and other companies from
all over the world (see further details at our site Odin Teatret
Film).
* A library of over a hundred theatre
magazines, the largest of its kind in Scandinavia (see further
details at our site BOOKSHOP).
