CGTN:China Plane Crash: Expert
on enhancing air safety, passengers' confidence
Professor Diao Weimin from the Civil Aviation Management
Institute of China spoke to us on enhancing air
transport safety and restoring passenger's confidence, following a
plane crash.
As part of Chinese tradition, white and yellow chrysanthemums
are placed on the ground to remember the 123 passengers and nine
crew members who died in the China Eastern Airlines cras
h on March 21st. The accident has left a mark on the nation's
aviation industry.
DIAO WEIMIN Professor, Civil Aviation Management Institute of
China 'I think technology, regulations, and training are the key
elements to ensure civil aviation safety. Aviation regulations are
a valuable experience acquired from a wealth of explorations,
practices and lessons learned from accidents.'
The expert group created by the Civil Aviation Administration
of China, or the CAAC, has arrived in the country's north to carry
out safety supervision. The inspection will be conducted in all
areas, including regional civil aviation administrations, airline
companies, airports and pilot training organizations.
DIAO WEIMIN Professor, Civil Aviation Management
Institute of China 'I've always believed that air
travel is the safest mode of transportation. The 100 years of civil
aviation development has seen a human pursuit for flight safety for
those 100 years. From technical requirements to safety management,
all these ensure the safety of air transport is superior to other
means of transportation, thanks to the technologies and management
that have been utilized in the aviation industry. In fact a study
conducted by US National Safety Council has found that air travel
is 22 times safer than travelling by car.'
In addition, China Eastern Airlines says the compensation
process for the families who lost their loved ones in the accident
has formally begun. Experts say one of the most important things
now is to restore people's confidence in civil aviation
safety.

DIAO WEIMIN Professor, Civil Aviation Management Institute
of China 'China's airlines have marked the longest
continuous flight safety record in world civil aviation history of
over 100 million continuous hours as of February 19. This was the
best safety performance in the history of China's civil aviation
industry. So I believe our civil aviation industry is still
trustworthy. At the same time, we have a statistic that behind
every passenger in each flight, we have around 145 aviation
practitioners who are working to ensure their safety, including
pilots, air hostesses, dispatchers, air traffic controllers, etc.
And that is why we can reach this level of safety.'
YOU YANG Beijing 'The decoding and analysis of the plane's
two black boxes is underway. Chinese authorities say the
investigation involves not only the black boxes, but also
information collected at the site and experimental verification.
