SOLSTICE, one of the two instants each year that mark the beginning of summer and winter on the calendar. The one occurring on or about June 22 (depending on leap years) is in the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. The other occurs on or about December 22. The solstices are the times when the sun reaches its greatest angular distance north or south of the equator. Thus at noon on June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun reaches its greatest yearly height above the southern horizon. This noon height changes very little for several days—hence the word solstice, deriving from Latin words for “sun” and “to stop.”
