意大利于1978年6月23日成为联合国教科文组织世界遗产委员会成员国。
世界遗产委员会任期：1978-1985，1987-1993，1993-2001,2021-2025。
截止2021年7月31日第44届世界遗产大会闭幕，意大利共计拥有58项世界遗产，遗产包括53项文化遗产，5项自然遗产；其中7项跨国共同申报项目：1项与梵蒂冈共有，2项与瑞士共有，1项为3国共有，1项为6国共有，1项为7国共有，1项为18国共有。遗产总数名列世界第1位。
