拉罗什福科(La
Rochefoucauld,1613--1680)是法国17世纪著名箴言家,思想家,1613年9月15日生于巴黎,父亲去世后,承袭了德*拉罗什福科公爵的封号。曾经卷入反对红衣主教黎塞留(Richeliu)的政治斗争,身陷囹圄,后流放到外省。摄政时期,因不满红衣主教马扎兰(Mazarin)的政策,参加投石党的武装斗争,身受重伤,从此不问政治。晚年出入于萨不莱夫人与拉法耶特夫人的文艺沙龙,并从事写作,作品有《回忆录》(1662)与《道德箴言录》。
摘自书中的“序言”部分。
第一次看到这本书,看到它罗列了著者的许多有价值的箴言,一句一句的,简洁而又深刻的箴言。况且是英汉对照,就当作学英语。价钱合理,没想太多就买了。现在摘录一些我觉得有意思的部分出来供大家分享。

1--Our virtues are most frequently but vices
disguised.
我们的德行经常就是被掩饰的恶行。
2--Self-love is the greatest of
flatterers.
自爱是最大的奉承者。
3--Self love is more cunning than the most cunning man in the
world.
自爱之精明甚于世界上最精明之人。
4--The duration of our passions is no more dependant upon us
than the duration of our life.
人们的激情存续之期,不会长于生命中断之时。
5--Passion often rendersthe most clever man a
fool,and even sometimes renders the most foolish man
clever.
激情常常使得最精明的人变成傻瓜,有时使得最愚蠢的人变得精明。
6--In the human heart there is a perpetual generation of
passions;so that the ruin of one is almost always the foundation of
another.
激情在人们的心中总是恒久不衰,一种激情的破灭意味着另一种激情的诞生。

1--Passions often produce their contraries:avarice sometimes leads
to prodigality ,and prodigality to avarice;we are often obstinate
through weakness and daring through timidity.
激情常常激起它们的对立面:贪欲有时导致挥霍,挥霍有时导致贪婪。我们经常由软弱走向坚强,由怯懦走向勇敢。
2--Whatever care we take to conceal our passions under the
appearances of piety and honour,they are always to be seen
through these veils.
无论我们如何煞费苦心将激情隐藏于虔诚和正义的外表之下,它们总能透过这层面纱而昭然若揭。
3--The clemency of Princes is often but policy to win the
affections of the people.
君主的仁慈常常只是笼络人心的政治姿态。
4--This clemency of which they make a merit,arises oftentimes from
vanity,sometimes from idleness,oftentimes from fear,and almost
always from all three combined.

1--Those who are condemned to death affect sometimes a constancy
and contempt for death which is only the fear of facing it;so that
one may say that this constancy and contempt are to their mind what
the bandage is to their eyes.
那些被判死刑的人们,有时会对死亡作出坚定不移和蔑视的姿态,这其实恰恰是害怕直面死亡。因此,人们可以说,这种坚定不移和蔑视之于他们的精神,就像绷带之于他们的眼睛。
2--People are often vain of their passions,even of the worst,but
envy is a passion so timid and shame-faced that no one ever dare
avow her.
人们常常自负于他们的激情,甚至是罪恶的激情;而嫉妒却是一种既羞怯又羞耻的激情,以致于没有人敢于坦诚自己拥有它。
3--Jealousy is in a manner just and reasonable,as it tends to
preserve a good which belongs,or which we believe belongs to us,on
the other hand envy is a fury which cannot endure the happiness of
others.
猜忌在某种意义上是公平合理的,因为它倾向于使人们保护属于自己或认为属于自己的利益。相反,嫉妒却是一种无法忍受他人幸福的愤怒。
4--The evil that we do does not attract to us so much persecution
and hatred as our good qualities.
人们的善行,往往比人们的恶行招致更多的迫害和仇恨。
5--We have more strength than will;and it is often merely for an
excuse we say things are impossible.
与拥有的意志相比,我们拥有更多的力气。而经常只是因为我们的一个借口,一些事情就变得不可能完成了。

1--If we had no faults we should not take so much pleasure in
noting those of others.
如果我们自己完美无瑕,那么也就不会在关注别人的缺点中获得如此多的乐趣。
2--If we had no pride we should not complain of that of
others.
如果我们没有骄傲之心,我们也就不应抱怨他人的骄傲。
笔者:出来混,或多或少都会有攀比或被攀比。自己觉得我是被别人攀比多过我攀比别人。尤其是我们这些刚毕业的大学生,对工作的看法难免有点不合理的地方。工作的待遇啊,发展前途啊,工作的激情啊。什么都可以拿来比较一下。其实我自己也是个会攀比的人。在学校的时候,或多或少会攀比着成绩。但是,现在攀比不起别人了,就想着不想和别人攀比,或者鄙视攀比别人的人肤浅庸俗。其实,可能是因为我没有了那份骄傲之心吧。面对着别人如何骄傲自己的工作,如何骄傲自己的成绩,我都没有什么好抱怨的了。甘于这样被别人比下去,是没有雄心大志,还是甘于默默耕耘?让我有成绩的时候,我就能保证自己不会和别人攀比吗?人啊,真是奇怪的动物。
3--Pride is much the same in all men,the only difference is the
method and manner of showing it.
骄傲对所有人而言都是相同的,唯一不同的只是表现的方法和方式各异。
4--Interest speaks all sorts of tongues and plays all sorts of
characters;even that of disinterestedness.
利益用所有种类的语言说话,玩弄所有种类的人,甚至是最公正无私的人。
5--Interest blinds some and makes some see.
利益使一些人盲目,也使另一些人眼明。

1--Those who apply themselves too closely to little things often
become incapable of great things.
那些过分专注于琐事的人,往往不能胜任大事。
2--We have not enough strength to follow all our reason.
我们没有足够的力量来完全遵循我们的理智。
笔者:我们总会做出一些不符合理智的“疯狂”举动。但是,什么才是理智呢?斤斤计较就是理智?什么都认为不行,不值得冒险就是理智?不牺牲自己就是理智?我们的确没有足够的力量来完全遵循我们的理智,所以,人的行为有些时候真的会出人意料啊。
3--Our temper sets a price upon every gift that we receive from
fortune.
命运带给我们的每件礼物,都由我们的心情来决定价格。
4--Happiness is in the taste,and not in the things themselves;we
are happy from possessing what we like,not from possessing what
other like.
幸福在于品味,而非在于事物本身。我们幸福在于拥有自己的所爱之物,而不在于拥有他人的所爱之物。
笔者:这句话有多少人懂呢?我们明白我们的追求真是自己所要的,自己所爱的吗?幸福在于品味,这句话提醒自己,幸福是什么。
5--We are never so happy or so unhappy as we suppose.
我们从未像想象中的那么幸福,也从未像想象中的那么不幸。
6--Whatever difference there appears in our fortunes,there is
nevertheless a certain compensation of good and evil which renders
them equal.
无论我们的命运表现得多么悬殊,仍然存在着使好运和厄运相互均衡的补偿。
7--Whatever great advantages nature may give,it is not the
alone,but fortune also that makes the hero.
无论天赋如何有优势,仅靠天赋造就不了英雄,英雄的造就还需要时势运气。

dispositions than their fortune.

2--Sincerity is an openness of heart;we find it very few
people;what we usually see is only an artful dissimulation to win
the confidence of other.
真诚是一种心灵的开放,这种真诚只能在极少人身上找到。而我们通常所看到的真诚,不过是为了赢取他人的信任的巧妙掩饰罢了。
3--What grace is to the body good sense is to the mind.
优雅之于身体,犹如良知之于精神。
4--There is no disguise which can long hide love where it
exists,nor feign it where it does not.

5--If we judge of love by the majority of its results it rather
resembles hatred than friendship.

follow our taste or our pleasure when we prefer our friends to
ourselves;nevertheless it is only by that preference that
friendship can be true and perfect.
我们只爱符合我们心意的事物。当我们爱朋友甚于爱自己时,也不过是遵循自己的趣味和喜好而已。然而,正是这种爱朋友甚于爱自己的情意,才使得友谊真实而完美。
2--It is more disgraceful to distrust than to be deceived by our
friends.
不信任朋友比受朋友的欺骗更可耻。
3--Our distrust of another justifies his deceit.
我们对他人的提防,证明了他人的欺骗。
4--Men would not live long in society were they not the dupes of
each other.
假如人们之间没有相互欺骗,人们就不会在社会中长存。

1--We become so accustomed to disguise ourselves to others that at
last we are disguised to ourselves.
我们如此习惯于向别人伪装自己,以至于到头来,我们向自己伪装自己。
2--We often act treacherously more from weakness than from a fixed
motive.
人们的背叛行为更多是来自软弱,而不是一个特定的动机。
3--If we conquer our passions it is more from their weakness than
from our strength.
如果我们抵制住了激情的诱惑,更多的是因为激情的脆弱,而不是我们力量的坚定。
4--The daily employment of cunning marks a little mind,it generally
happens that those who resort to it in one respect to protect
themselves lay themselves open to attack in another.

5--Cunning and treachery are the offspring of incapacity.

11--One of the reasons that we find so few persons rational and
agreeable in conversation is there is hardly a person who does not
think more of what he wants to say than of his answer to what is
said.The most clever and polite are content with only seeming
attentive while we perceive in their mind and eyes that at the very
time they are wandering from what is said and desire to return to
what they want to say.Instead of considering that the worst way to
persuade or please others to try thus strongly to please
ourselves,and that to listen well and to answer well are some of
the greatest charms we can have in conversation.
在交谈中,我们很少发现有人通情达理且令人愉快,原因之一就是几乎所有人考虑更多的是他想说什么,而不是他对人们所说事情的答案。那些最精明、最礼貌的人也只不过是作出一副正在倾听的姿态。此时,从他们精神和眼神中,我们可以感觉到他们对于我们所讨论问题的茫然不知和想要将话题转到他们关心的问题上的一种欲望。他们没有考虑到:极力使自己惬意是说服和取悦别人最坏的办法,相反,认真倾听和认真回答是我们在交谈中的最大魅力之一。
12--We often boast that we are never bored,but yet we are so
conceited that we do not perceive how often we bore others.
我们经常吹嘘自己从不无聊,但是我们如此自负而感受不到自己是多么地烦扰他人。
13--As it is the mark of great minds to say many things in a few
words,so it is that of little minds to use many words to say
nothing.
言简意赅是伟大思想的标志,同理,渺小思想的标志则是空话连篇。
14--Usually we only praise to be praised.
通常,我们只为得到赞美而赞美他人。
