The Kunqu Opera originated in Suzhou over
600 years ago and had been very
popular especially
during the
Ming and Qing Dynasties. It has also been
called the mother of all other operas in China. What's more,
it was designated as one of the first batch of world intangible
cultural heritages by UNESCO in 2001.
The opera is incredibly beautiful like costume, sound, make-up,
music, gesture and performance. It must be perfect if the opera is
performed in Suzhou classical gardens, so highly recommend you to
appreciate Kunqu Opera at the following gardens.

The opera had become more and more prosperous with
the
development of booming
tourism
industry before
the COVID-19 pandemic. In my opinion, the Institution of Kun Opera
is the best place where you can enjoy the opera.

Tourists
can appreciate 2 or 3 short episodes of the opera
in the Master-of-Nets Garden, the world cultural heritage site, at
nights from late March to November every day in a year.

Another good option is to appreciate a whole lovely story performed
by the Kuqu Opera in the Pavilion of Surging Waves, one of the
oldest classical gardens of Suzhou and the world cultural heritage
site as well.
The lovely story has been spread for hundreds
years, which was written in a novel called 'Six Chapters of a
Floating Life' by Shenfu in Qing Dynasty.

Many people prefer to appreciate the opera at the tea house when
they stroll along the Pingjiang Road or Shantang Street.
Particularly, Fuxi Teahouse at Pingjiang road is often fully
occupied at night because of Master Lv Chengfang, who is excellent
at interpreting the opera with vivid oral language.
