An interesting experiment is taking place at the Children’s
Hospital in London.
Dogs, cats, and even horses help sick children to get better. There
are a number of reasons why this treatment(治疗) is important. Dr.
Marcus Finch of the Children’s Hospital explains, “Children and
teenagers have many changes as they are growing up. When they have
problems, it’s not easy for them to open up and talk. But when they
are with a pet animal, they calm down, relax, and smile. Animals
don’t speak and so they don’t criticize(评论). They listen and they
don’t stop the children. Children can talk to animals because they
help to feed the animals and look after them.” At the Children’s

At the age of 16, Einstein failed in several courses because he
mixed with a group of naughty kids. One weekend morning, Einstein
held a fishing rod and
was about to fish with those kids, his father stopped him and said
to him calmly,' Einstein, you're so fond of playing all the day
that you failed in the examination. I'm so worried about your
future with your mother.'
'What are you worrying about? Jack and Robert also failed, but
don't they go fishing as usual?'
'My boy, you can't think so.' Looking at Einstein, his father said
lovingly,' There goes a fable in our hometown. I hope you can
listen to it carefully.
'There were two cats playing on the roof. Once a cat fell into the
chimney holding the other. When the two cats climbed out of the
chimney, a cat's face was stained with the soot while the other's
face was clean. Seeing the soot-faced cat, the clean cat thought
its face was dirty and ugly, so it quickly ran to the riverside and
washed its face. The soot-faced cat saw the clean-faced cat,
thinking its face was also clean, so it hung out in the
street.
'Einstein, no one can be your mirror. Only you are your own mirror.
Taking other people to be your mirror, even a talented person may
become a fool.'
Hearing this, Einstein was ashamed to lay down his fishing rod and
returned to his small room. Since then, Einstein often took himself
as a mirror to examine and reflect, and kept hinting himself: I am
unique, and no one is the same as me, so I needn't be as
mediocre as others. This was why he succeeded.
You must see yourself clearly. Your future doesn't depend on how
others do, but on how you are going to do.

archer fish
velvet worm
Chameleons
In the animal world, animals have to catch their own food without
tools(工具). How do they do it?
The archer fish lives in river in
Southest Asia. It catches and eats insects(昆虫) that fly too near to
the water. It has two different ways of hunting(捕猎). If the insect
is less than a metre away, the archer fish jumps out of the water
and catches it. If the insect is between one and two metres away,
the fish hits it with water from its mouth.
|
Some animals use a sticky liquid(粘液)
or glue to hunt their prey(猎物). The velvet worm has two “glue
guns’’. It fires these at insects and the glue comes out in strings
about one metre long. When the glue touches the insect, it drives
quickly and the insect is caught.
|
Chameleons have very strong, sticky
tongues. In fact, a chameleon’s tongue is longer than its body!
When an insect flies too close, and the chameleon pushes its tongue
out of its mouth to hit the insect and catch it. The insect doesn’t
usually see the chameleon’s tongue because it moves too
quickly!
