Organising a ‘Grandparents Day’ at YK Pao
School was the idea of Anna Sohmen Pao, School Founder.
She
belie
ves that care for the elderly and care for youth are important
values of Chinese culture.
Therefore, a ‘Grandparents Day’
is an excellent way to help meet our School Mission to ‘give our
students a foundation in Chinese language and culture’.
Grandparents make an important contribution to families and
society, and this should be recognised.
Children should
learn to be grateful to and to respect their elders even from a
young age.
Grandparents Day this
year was a wonderful event.
There were performances by some
grandparents, including a Tai Chi performance, fan dance,
calligraphy and even computer-aided graphic design!
One
Grandfather also gave a juggling performance, which captivated the
students.
The students recited poems for their
grandparents, including ‘Elders Day’.
They also performed
songs and dances and presented grandparents with cards, flowers and
traditional rice cakes they had made themselves.
Some
grandparents were moved to tears by the event.
One
non-Chinese grandfather said, ‘I have only ever heard of Fathers
Day and Mothers Day, but this is the first time I have ever heard
of a ‘Grandparents Day’.
What a wonderful idea!’
