(一)借助隐喻法
英文中人们常借助生动而又通俗的隐喻来婉转、幽默地表达自己的说话艺术。如After three days in Japan, the spinal column becomes extraordinarily flexible. 作者把日本人习惯于鞠躬说成 “the spinal column becomes extraordinarily flexible”
(二)迂回陈述法
对于有伤大雅、令人不快的话,人们常借用迂回陈述法拐弯抹角地来表达,旨在文雅,如:
We have three main difficulties with regard to(关于) those terms.
“Three main difficulties”, 实际上是拐弯抹角地说我们“有三点反对意见”。
汉语人们不直说某人“理论水平差”,而说“理论水平亟待进一步提高”;不直说“不赞成某个观点”,而说“有待商榷”。

人们对于严重的事态,有时故意轻描淡写,降格处理,以达到委婉效果。如:In private I should merely call him a liar. In the press you should use words: 'reckless disregard for truth'. And in Parliament----that you regard he 'should have been so misinformed'.
