Today I
would like to show you a
distinctive and exciting building
in London – the
Gherkin, which is also my
favourite contemporary building in
London. When I first saw
it, I was totally shocked
by its stunning
beauty.
今天我带大家游览伦敦的一座极具现代特色的建筑
—
the Gherkin
(小黄瓜
)。这座建筑也是我最喜欢的伦敦现代建筑。当我第一次亲眼见到它的时候，就被它的建筑之美所震撼。
The
Gherkin
I am
guessing that many people
reading this have seen the
Gherkin on TV or in
magazines. It's an iconic
building in London. Because of
its geographical location, the
Gherkin is also called 30
St Mary Axe. This isn't a
very imaginative name, is it?!
I prefer
its nickname, the Gherkin. It
was also called the Swiss
Re Building, because it belonged
to the Swiss Re-insurance
Company before.
All my
friends and I like calling
it the Gherkin. Have you
eaten a gherkin before? You
can eat pickled cucumbers or
gherkins in Macdonald's in
China.
我想很多朋友在电视或者杂志上看到过
Gherkin.
它已经是伦敦的一座地标性建筑。它位于伦敦的市中心，
St Mary Axe

30号，所以它也叫
30 St Mary Axe.
这个名字真的没有一点创意，是不是。
我喜欢它俏皮的绰号
Gherkin。它以前还被叫做
Swiss
Re, 也就是
Swiss Re-insurance.

The Gherkin
and an old church close
to it
The Gherkin
is very close to Liverpool
Street Tube Station. Whenever I
pass by Liverpool Street, I
try to find some time to
have a look at it. Only
when you are looking at
it from very near can you
explore its uniqueness and
grandeur.
Its glass
façade is deep blue
with many swooshing curves
running from top to bottom.
When you are looking up
you can see the building
and its patterns blending
harmoniously into the sky.
Gherkin距离
Liverpool
地铁站很近。但当你近距离地接近它，你才会发现它的壮观。由于

The

Actually, the
Gherkin is not very high.
It only has 40 floors and
is 180 meters high. The
design of the Gherkin is
modern but low-profile, magnificent
but not weird. It mirrors
the old buildings surrounding it
and the old buildings also
reflect back on it. It's
marvellous.

并不是很高。只有
40层，高度也只有
180多米。

的设计虽然现代却并不张扬，华丽却不怪异。它与周围古老的建筑物相互反射，令人叹为观止。
At the
entrance to the Gherkin, there
are several metasequoia trees.
The green trees look even
greener in contrast to the
blue curtain wall of the
Gherkin; it's very impressive.
There are
several pubs on the ground
floor of the Gherkin. In
the late afternoon, after work,
many professionals working in
the building like to have
a pint of beer on the
small square outside the pubs,
enjoying a beer and a
chat as well as the
summer breeze.
在

的入口处有几棵水杉树。
碧绿的树叶映照在蓝色幕墙上，格外惹眼。在
Gherkin
一楼侧面有几个酒吧。在傍晚下班后，很多人会在酒吧外的小广场上喝一杯啤酒，在夏日的微风中，心旷神怡。

the Gherkin, I suggest you
have a walk around it.
There are many ancient churches,
houses and markets nearby.
It will
be a relaxing and impressive
trip walking on the cobblestone
roads and sampling an ancient
and modern London.
