Sustainable Agriculture: Good for Farmer, Good for Earth

Chad Ray and Large Black Hog (Ray Family Farms)

Although Jodi and Chad Ray’s farm is less than 35 years old, they have embraced sustainable farming techniques that will allow their land to prosper for generations.
With just 180 acres (73 hectares) in Bunn, North Carolina, the Rays have managed to revitalize the soil by judicious crop rotation and soil and water conservation while reserving some of their acreage for wildlife.
They also raise rare livestock such as Galloway beef cattle, which are prized for their low-fat but high-flavor meat, Large Black Hogs (shown here with Chad), a nearly extinct breed, and free-range, organically grown chickens.
In addition to their concern for animal welfare and sustained productivity of the soil, the Rays devote time to educating their customers and community about environmental stewardship. Their devotion to understanding and preserving the agricultural circle of life recently won them recognition as “Champions of Change” by the White House.
