Climate
Action Plan)、“清洁能源计划”(
Clean
Power

(Apple
(United Parcel
Services Inc.)
American
Business Act on Climate Pledge)。

Slowing climate change is everyone’s responsibility. In the U.S.,
the national government, the local levels (states and cities) and
many businesses that make up the private sector are all doing their
part to power a clean-energy revolution.
National goals
At the national level, the federal government plays
an
important role in setting overall climate goals. In March 2015, the
U.S. committed to reduce its emissions 26 to 28 percent from 2005
levels by 2025. Through the
Climate
Action Plan, the
Clean
Power Plan,
new fuel-economy standards and other
efforts, the administration is reducing U.S. carbon pollution.
Individual government departments have taken steps to cut
greenhouse emissions from
their vehicles and their
buildings’ energy systems — all told, federal agencies reduced
emissions by 17 percent in a recent five-year period.

Local innovation
Often, innovative climate policies are local. For example, many
city dwellers are finding new ways to get around. Portland’s
bicycle policies have increased
ridership five times since 1990, and more than half of
New York City’s buses run on alternative
fuel.
At the state level, California has long been an environmental
leader. In two decades, the state limited increases in emissions to
just 4 percent while the population grew by 30 percent and the
state’s economy grew by 54 percent. During that period (1990–2010),
the state added 100,000 jobs. California has clearly set the stage
for important action on climate in other states and in the
nation.

California, 15 percent of all new cars will be zero emission in
2025. (State Dept./Jamie McCann)
Business opportunities
Companies are getting in on the act. There are thousands of
examples. Tech giant Apple Inc. runs its U.S. operations on 100
percent renewable energy. And United Parcel Service Inc., a
package-delivery company,
has driven more than 800 million
kilometers in smart-fuel vehicles since 2000.
Right now, 81 top global brands with more than $3 trillion in
annual revenue have signed the
American
Business Act on Climate Pledge. Their signatures promise
significant actions to reduce carbon emissions and
support a
global solution to climate change at
COP21, the 2015
U.N. conference on climate change.
Bank of
America is nearly tripling its support for green business. (State
Dept./Jamie McCann) Already, climate action at every level
has helped. Since 2008, America has increased wind power production
threefold and solar production twentyfold. With national goals,
local innovation and business solutions, the U.S. will continue to
#ActOnClimate and build a clean-energy future.
