Six Brilliant Illustrations of Chinese and Western Cultural Differences

A Westerner who first moves to China—a countrythat developed in isolation for much of its history—faces two major challenges. The first is understanding the Chinese language, often regarded as one ofthe world's most difficult to master. But the second is possibly even morevexing: cultural differences. Some are obvious, but others can be so insidiousthat it can require years to understand. And while the term is overused (Afriend in Beijingtried to explain away the city's crooked taxidrivers as a “cultural difference.” I didn't buy it.) there areany number of legitimate differences in the ways Chinese people and Westernersgo about their lives.

These days in China, it isn't hard to find quietrestaurants, young women who like tan skin, independent travelers, and bosseswho don't lord over their workers, so perhaps over time these differences mighterode. But for now, these illustrations neatly encapsulate some of habits, customs, and expectations for which most Chinese people part ways withWesterners.

China'sold people are better off in her opinion. Then again I'm not a dog person.(Still I think human contact is better than dog contact)

The comparisons are superficial.

Well, every event I attend in New Jersey -personal, family, or public, religious or musical or just a walk in a park -there are dozens of cameras documenting everything .... which is silly becausethose people miss the event for the 'memory' of it.

The 'standing in line' graphic may beapplicable when shopping but tho I've never been to Germany, my experience of Germantourists has been the opposite. To stand in a ski lift line in front of a packof German tourists is to risk death by trampling.

I think the 'standing in line'graphic is applicable to 'driving in traffic' as well.

Germans, contrary to stereotype, don'tstand in neat lines. Relative to the Chinese, maybe -- but I spent some time inGermany and, though my German was decent enough, I avoided the deli/meatcounter unless the store was practically vacant -- there was no 'take anumber' nor a line to speak of so I would wait helplessly while everyonemanaged to go before me.

I've never seen a German queue that sloppy.

The 'Ideal of beauty' - am imissing something? What is the difference here? What are these images supposeto represent?

Probably being tanned versus usingwhitening products.

Correct. For an agrarian economy, notexposed to the sun also means not being a farmer.

Bingo!

The restaurant is a public place. Given thatChinais a populous country. most public places in its cities have more people persquare meter and higher ambient noise level in comparison to sparsely populatedcountries. And the Chinese people have got used to raise their voice level togot themselves heard.
