The ‘walk in’ was uttered with closed teeth, and expressed the sentiment （情感）, ‘Go to the Deuce（见鬼）:’ even the gate over which he leant manifested （明显的） no sympathising movement to the words; and I think that circumstance determined me to accept the invitation: I felt interested in a man who seemed more exaggeratedly （夸张地） reserved （矜持；拘谨） than myself.
When he saw my horse’s breast fairly pushing the barrier, he did put out his hand to unchain it, and then sullenly （闷闷不乐地） preceded me up the causeway（在石路上闷闷不乐的走在我前面）, calling, as we entered the court,—‘Joseph, take Mr. Lockwood’s horse; and bring up some wine.’
‘Here we have the whole establishment of domestics （家务的；家的）, I suppose,’ was the reflection suggested by this compound （复合的，这里☞牵马、拿酒两个命令） order. ‘No wonder the grass grows up between the flags, and cattle are the only hedge-cutters.’ （刚好呼应前一句，Mr. Lockwood以为全家只有这一个人呢，难怪石板缝间长满了草，而且篱笆也无人修剪。）

Pure, bracing（bracing up：振奋精神的） ventilation（通风，这里☞流通的空气） they must have up there at all times, indeed: one may guess the power of the north wind blowing over the edge, by the excessive slant of a few stunted（small, little, tiny） firs（冷杉） at the end of the house; and by a range of gaunt（憔悴的；荒凉的） thorns all stretching their limbs one way, as if craving（渴望得到） alms（施舍） of the sun. Happily, the architect had foresight to build it strong: the narrow windows are deeply set in the wall, and the corners defended with large jutting（凸出的） stones.
Before passing the threshold（门槛）, I paused to admire a quantity of grotesque（奇形怪状的） carving lavished（巨大的；奢华的，这里☞大量的） over the front（修饰carving的）, and especially about the principal door（正门）; above which, among a wilderness of crumbling（残破的） griffins（狮身鹰首兽） and shameless little boys, I detected the date ‘1500,’ and the name ‘Hareton Earnshaw.（is a character in Emily Brontë's novel Wuthering Heights. He is the son of Hindley Earnshaw and Hindley's wife Frances. At the end of the novel, he makes plans to wed Catherine Linton, with whom he falls in love.）’ I would have made a few comments, and requested a short history of the place from the surly owner; but his attitude at the door appeared to demand my speedy entrance, or complete departure（离开）, and I had no desire to aggravate（激怒、惹恼） his impatience previous to（……之前） inspecting（检查、审视） the penetralium（内室）.
