英雄是什么？当美国6名战士将他们的国旗在琉璃岛上竖起的时候，他们肯定不会知道自己已经成了民族英雄。而那一刻，也被永远载入了史册。
一切均源自这幅至今仍被人们敬仰的照片。当幸存的3位照片中的主角Doc（“医生”，starring Ryan
Phillippe瑞安•菲利普）、Rene（雷内，starring Jesse
Bradford耶西•布拉德福）、 Chief（“酋长”，starring Adam
Beach亚当•比齐）受邀回国接受全国人民的朝拜，并以此来筹集军款时，一场宣扬英雄的闹剧开演了。
战争结束后，他们3人渐渐淡出了人们的视线，并且不约而同地对当年在岛上所发生的事实三缄其口。岛上到底发生了什么事？这张照片到底是抓拍还是摆拍？是人们迄今仍在议论纷纷的问题。而看完本片之后，这些已经都显得不重要了。当兄弟手足一个一个在眼前倒下，战死沙场，而自己却因政治利诱受到人们顶礼膜拜时，“英雄”这个封号显得尤其沉重、奢华。
Senior Rene: Every jackass thinks
he knows what war is.
That’s because they’ve never
been in one. They like
things nice and simple: good
and evil, heroes
and villains, and always plenty
of both. Most of time
they are not who we think
they are. Most guys I
knew would never talk about
what happened over there.
Probably because they're still
trying to forget about it.
They certainly didn’t think
themselves as heroes.
老年雷内：每个混蛋都自以为了解战争，那是因为他们未经沙场。他们看事情喜欢简单化——正与邪，英雄与坏蛋，或两者兼具。而更多时候，事实与之相距甚远。我所认识的人都不愿提起当年在那里发生的一切。也许他们是想忘掉那些吧。他们当然不想自诩为英雄。
Iggy: You actually chose marine
because they have the best
uniforms?
Rene: No sense of being a
hero. You don’t look like
one.

Senior Rene: Nobody would know
that’s a second flag. No
one knows. Everybody saw the
damn picture and made up
their own stories about it.
But your dad and the
others knew what they had
done and what they had
not done. All your friends
die. It’s hard not to be
called a hero for saving
someone’s life but for putting
up a pole.
老年雷内：没人知道那是第二面旗帜，没人知道。他们只是看到那张该死的照片就凭自己的想象编造故事。但是你父亲和他的战友知道事情的来龙去脉的。你的战友纷纷阵亡。被称为英雄，仅仅是因为竖起了一面旗子，而不是因为救人一命，是令人很难接受的。
Chief: You want us to plant
the flag on a pile of
papier-mache?
Bud Gerder: Hey, that’s showbiz.
Try stand how you did in
the first time, and you
know, pretend the other three
guys with you.
Chief: The dead guys.
Bud Gerder: Yeah. Right.
Doc: Okay. Not a problem.
Bud Gerder: Good.
Doc: Where do we imagine Hank
stands?
Bud Gerder: Sorry?
Doc: I’m thinking he wasn’t
there. We’re kinda hard to
leave a space for him.
Bud Gerder: I think you know
exactly where he was. You
pointed him out to his
mother.
“酋长”：你要我们把旗插在这堆纸雕上？
杰德长官：嘿，那叫展台。尽量站得和第一次插旗一样。假装另外3个和你们一起。
“酋长”：牺牲的那些？
杰德长官：是的，没错。
“医生”：好的，不成问题。

Chief: I can’t take them calling
me a hero. What I did
is trying not to get
shot. So many things I
saw. So many things I
did. They weren’t things to
be proud of, you know.
Mike… Mike was a hero.
Did ya ever meet him?
Keys: No.
Chief: Best Marine I ever met.
Keys: No, chief. Think if Mike
would sit here instead of
you, he’d be saying the
same thing about himself—not
being a hero.
Chief: Maybe. He was a good
guy. So I think he would
be shame of me, seeing
the way I am.
“酋长”：我受不了被他们称作英雄。我的战绩无非是躲过了子弹而已。我所见的，我所为的，没有一件是值得自豪的，你知道吗？麦克……麦克才是英雄。你见过他吗？
基思：没有。

Tourist: That’s a hero, kids.
Countryman: Hey, hero. Lift this
basket, will you? Seems heavy
for me.

James Bradley: I finally came to
the conclusion that maybe he
was right. Maybe there are
no such things as heroes.
Maybe there are just people
like my dad. I finally
came to understand why they
were so uncomfortable being
called heroes. Heroes are
something WE create, something
we need. It's a way for
us to understand what is
almost incomprehensible, how people
could sacrifice so much for
us; but for my dad and
these men, the risks they
took, the wounds they suffered,
they did that for their
buddies. They may have fought
for their country but they
died for there friends, for
the man in front, for the
man beside him. And if we
wish to truly honor these
men, we should remember them
the way they really were,
the way my dad remembered
them.
詹姆斯：我最后的结论是，他可能是对的。也许世上本无英雄这回事，只有像我父亲一样的凡人。而我终于理解了为何他们对被人称做英雄如此不安。英雄只是我们创造的，我们所需要的而已。事过境迁，我们已无法了解为何人们愿意牺牲那么多。我父亲和这些人，所冒的险，所受的伤，都是为了兄弟手足。他们可能是为国而战，但是为兄弟而捐躯。为前方兄弟，和身旁的手足。如果我们真的想纪念这些人，就应该缅怀他们真实的一面，就如我父亲记忆中那样。
