'子曰'之汉译英举例
'论语'是我们每个中国人都应该熟读并且应该经常潜心琢磨思考的一本书;它所蕴涵的深刻哲理和不朽价值
不是那么轻而易举就能理解透彻的;我想只有随着人们年龄的增长,知识的增加,人生阅历的逐渐丰富,你才能
对它的精神实质一点一点地理解明白,可以毫不夸张地说'论语'尽管只有短短的20篇;但是它的的确确值得我
们去用心研究阅读实践一生.为了让全世界爱好人类与和平的人们能共同分享这本厚重的中国文化遗产,我国
有关部门组织人力将它翻译成了各种语言的文本,我手里目前就有两个英语的译本,一个是'中华书局'2008年
7月出版由刘殿爵先生翻译的文本;(以下简称刘译),另一个是'齐鲁出版社'2008年2月出版由潘富恩先生/温
少霞女士翻译的文本(以下简称潘译).我想对'论语'这部经典,每个人对它的内容理解都不可能一致,正如孔子
的其中的一句名言,'知者乐水,仁者乐山,'你看问题思考问题的角度不同,你本身的修养学识不同,那你解读此
书的结果就会两异.现在从'论语'20篇中抽出几个例子连同两种英语翻译排列如下,大家可以比较一下看看这
些解读距离你自己的理解有多远.
1.3. 子曰:'巧言令色,鲜矣仁'
刘译: The Master said,'It is rare, indeed, for a man with cunning
words and an ingratiating countenance to be benevolent.'
潘译: The Master said, 'Honey words and flattering looks seldom speak
of human-heartedness.'
1.16.子曰:'不患人之不己知,患不知人也.'
刘译:The Master said,'It is not the failure of others to appreciate
your abilities that should trouble you, but rather your failure to
appreciate theirs.'
潘译: The Master said,'I do not worry about others not knowing me;
what I worry about is that I do not know others.'
2.12.子曰:'君子不器.'
刘译:The Master said,' The gentleman is no vessel.'
潘译:The Master said,' The superior man is not like a utensil, which
only has one specific usage.'
2.15.子曰:'学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆.'
刘译: The Master said,' If one learns from others but does not think,
one will be bewildered. If, one the other hand, one thinks but does
not learn from others, one will be imperilled.'
潘译: The Master said,' He who learns without thinking is lost. He
who thinks without learning remains puzzled.'
4.23.子曰:'君子欲讷于言而敏于行.'
刘译: The Master said,' It is desirable for a gentleman to be slow of
speech but quick in action.'
潘译: The Master said,' The superior man should be slow in words and
earnest in deeds.'
6.23. 子曰:'知者乐水,仁者乐山.知者动,仁者静.知者乐,仁者寿.'
刘译: The Master said,' The wise find joy in water; the benevolent
find joy in mountains. The wise are active; the benevolent are
still. The wise are joyful; the benevolent are long-lived.'
潘译: The Master said,' The wise delight in water; the virtuous
delight in mountains. The wise are active;the virtuous are
tranquil. The wise are happy; the virtuous are long-lived.'
7.21. 子不语怪,力,乱,神.
刘译: The topics the Master did not speak of were
prodigies,force,disorder and gods.
潘译: The Master never talked of extraordinary things,feats of
strength, disorder or spiritual beings.
7.37. 子曰:'君子坦荡荡,小人长戚戚.'
刘译: The Master said,' The gentleman is easy of mind, while the
small man is ever full of anxiety.'
潘译: The Master said,' The superior man is always calm and at ease,
the small man is always fretting.'
8.14. 子曰:'不在其位,不谋其政.'
刘译: The Master said,'Do not concern yourself with matters of
government unless they are the responsibility of the office you are
in.'
潘译: The Master said,'He who holds no rank in a state discusses no
policies.'
10.24. 食不语,寝不言.
刘译: He did not converse at meals, nor did he talk in bed.
潘译: He did not talk at meals, nor speak in bed.
