Setup Step 1
Shared Database 共享数据库
Collaboration by definition means
working with multiple people and to take advantage of the Resolve
collaborative workflow you must use a shared Postgres SQL
database.

With regular local SQL databases, both
the free version and the studio version of Resolve can
connect to them however to connect to a shared SQL database you
must use Resolve Studio. Thus Resolve Studio is required for
all computers (and the same version must be used on all computers)
to enable
the collaborative workflow.
虽然免费版和Studio版的达芬奇都可以访问到本地SQL数据库,但是协同工作流的共享数据库需要Studio版达芬奇的支持,并且要求所有用户使用相同版本。
A while back, I
wrote an Insight about setting up a shared
Database. I’m not going to rehash all the setup steps here, so
be sure to check that article out.

If you do have a read
through, just keep in mind that Postgres SQL 8.4 is no longer used
by Resolve. Any references to it should be replaced with the newer
9.5 version that currently ships with Resolve Studio.

Yep, a Mac Mini is
a dated machine but it makes a great database server! Keep in mind
any Resolve system can act as a database server too. I just like
having a dedicated machine for the task.

Here are some additional
thoughts about a database server that I want to reiterate from my
earlier article:

- What
Computer For A Database Server? – as I mentioned in
my Insight on setting up a database server,
I use a Mac Mini for this purpose. If you don’t want to use an
additional computer, any Resolve workstation can be used. Setup is
easiest on Mac but can be done on a Windows or Linux based
machine.

handles a lot of traffic. For best performance, use a wired
network and not WiFi. Also, remember the database server
doesn’t have to have access to media used in a project which can
simplify setup – although many people do connect their
database server to their SANs.

- Don’t Forget
About Backups! – with more people working a project
at any time there is more potential for disaster! Make sure
to do regular backups of your shared SQL databases. This can be
done via individual client workstations, or on the database server
itself using the Resolve UI and can also be scripted
via the terminal to have regular backups made automatically.
The price of Resolve Studio (even at just $999) used to be a
barrier for some in getting database server put into action, but
now at $299 you can get three seats of Resolve for what used to be
a single seat – so no more excuses!

Setup Step 2 – Shared
Storage
To get the most out of a Resolve
Collaborative workflow shared storage is extremely
helpful.

Shared storage allows users to access
the same media, at the same time, which is almost by definition
collaboration.
共享储存允许多个用户同时访问同一个媒体,这就定义了协同工作的特点
As you probably know, all shared
storage is not created equal. An off the shelf NAS using
gigabit ethernet while technically shared storage is going to suck
and offer extremely disappointing performance.

10GBe SAN solutions are very
affordable these days. We’ve been using the Jelly Fish from Lumaforge
which rocks. Highly configurable, multiple built-in Gigabit
and 10GBe ports to suit most small to medium facilities, the Jelly
Fish is pretty compelling. Sam Mastman and the team at Lumaforge
also have some new things planned for the Jelly Fish that we’ll
discuss more in future
Insights.

The Jellyfish from Lumaforge is

Of course, Lumaforge is not the only
SAN game in town, there are compelling options from EditShare,
SmallTree and others. In addition, Fiber Channel solutions are very
popular.

From a collaboration standpoint, there
are several things to consider about shared storage:

- Bandwidth –
more users, less compressed footage = greater bandwidth
needs. A couple streams of ProRes is a lot less bandwidth intensive
than 5 streams of Open EXR. Shared storage bandwidth needs to be
well planned and thought out.

- Capacity – one
advantage that finishing has over editorial is that our jobs tend
to be much more transient. However, the promise of Resolve
Collaboration is adding other disciplines to the fold and for
editorial, that means A LOT of footage, not
just flattened files and media managed projects. A 50% pad in
storage is a good place to start. You should also think about
near-line and archival storage options.

mechanical drives still offer the most bang for the buck as
well as highest capacity, but SSDs both as media drives and setup
to support mechanical drives as a cache solution offer considerably
more speed. If your budget allows, an all-SSD SAN provides
incredible multi-user speed.

- Management –
not to be overlooked is how configurable and manageable a
shared storage solution is. Shared storage should allow you to
easily configure users, storage pools and essential setup design,
i.e. SMB/CIFS vs. AFP, etc.

your needs today probably won’t be your needs in a year. A

these days, just be sure to do your homework, ask lots of questions
and make smart, cost-effective decisions.

File Path

In many collaborative setups, there
will be a mix of Windows/Mac/Linux machines. While shared storage
allows all of those platforms to access the same media, one thing
to be aware of is Resolve uses absolute files paths for linking to
media files.

So for example, let’s say an editor
adds clips to the media pool on a Windows machine. The mount point
of the SAN on that machine is S:\

A colorist working on a Mac wants to
start coloring the project at the same time, however, when they go
to open the project in a collaborative mode, the media doesn’t
relink. Why?

S:\ doesn’t exist
on the Mac. That syntax is a Windows one. On the Mac the correct
path would be /volumes/NameOf

A mapped mount/file path
substitution is how you can get around different operating systems
using different file path nomenclature.

To get media to relink properly, add
in a substitute file path or what Resolve calls a mapped mount on
the Mac with the Windows path and on the Windows machine with the
Mac path. You do this in the media storage preferences – DaVinci
Resolve > Preferences > Media Storage.
为了使媒体文件能正常链接上,在达芬奇的 偏好设置
> 媒体存储
中设置映射挂载点以便跨平台访问解决文件路径不统一的情况。
To help minimize confusion on multiple
Windows systems I use the same drive letter as the mount
point.
即使在多个Windows平台之间我也用了相同的挂载点以减小混淆的情况。
Render Cache &
Optimized Media
渲染缓存和优化媒体
If you utilized the Render Cache and
Optimized Media functions of Resolve, you may want to share those
files created on one system with other systems.
To do so, you need to tell Resolve to
place all of these times on your shared storage. This is easy to do
– simply add your shared storage in the first location in your
Media Storage locations.

Unfortunately, you can’t reorder
locations in the Media Storage dialog. So, if the shared storage is
not in the first location you’ll need to delete other locations,
add shared storage as your first location and then add in other
locations that you might want.
杯具就是你没办法在媒体存储界面调整路径顺序,只能先添加共享存储路径,然后再添加其他的路径到媒体存储里。
It’s also a good idea to periodically
check the location of these items in your Project preferences just
to make sure everything is going to the right place.
最好还是经常在设置中检查一下路径是否正确以防万一。
Can You Fake
Shared Storage?
可以不用共享存储吗?
Just last week, Patrick and I were
China teaching color topics to an awesome group of Chinese
filmmakers. We did a class on the new Collaborative workflow, but
we didn’t bring any sort of shared storage with us on the 16-hour
flight.
So how could we demo the
workflow?
上周我和Patrick来中国给一个团队上协同工作流的课的时候,我并没有带上我用的共享存储设备,那我该如何演示?
With the same media local on
multiple machines combined with a database server, and Resolve
studio you don’t necessarily have to have shared storage for a
collaborative workflow, but it’s highly
recommended.
//你可以在不同的工作站中把素材放在相同的路径,再链接上数据库服务器以实现协同工作,因此你可以不必有共享存储,不过还是强烈建议你有一个。
By having media locally and using file path
substitutions (mapped mounts). Yep, just like the good ole days of
the sneakernet!

As along as all the same media is
local on the systems you’re working on, you can use mapped mounts
and a database server as described earlier to get around the shared
storage part of the collaborative workflow.

Would I recommend a setup like this?
No, but if you’re trying to get a feel for the collaborative
workflow prior to investing in shared storage, or collaborative
workflow is something you’re not going to do with great frequency,
then handling media locally could work just fine.
我反正是不会推荐这样的方法的。但是如果你想在购买共享存储之前体验一下协同工作或者协同工作的频率很小,在使用本地媒体来实现倒是可以的。
Setup Step 3 -
Roles
Not a technical aspect of setting up
Resolve collaboration, but equally important to shared databases
and shared storage is determining the roles of
collaborators.
除了技术方面的设置外,确定参与协同工作的成员,和共享数据库、共享存储在达芬奇协同工作中同样重要。
It’s true that Resolve doesn’t limit
what a user can do (it does on a temporary basis as different users
are working), but that’s a potentially dangerous
thing.
实际上达芬奇并没有限制参与的用户所能做的事情,而且在你使用期间所有操作都能生效,直至保存。但是这样就会出现一个潜在的隐患。
If every collaborator thinks they’re
the lead colorist you could quickly end up with a load of different
looks in a project. If everyone thinks they’re the lead editor,
story decisions could be made that not everyone agrees with. And if
everyone thinks they’re the audio mixer….well you get the
idea.
如果每个参与协同编辑的人都认为自己是“首席”调色师、剪辑师或者混音师的话。。。那简直太糟糕了,每个人都会做出自己的修改,混乱的调色、莫名其妙的剪辑……你的工程将会变得一团糟。
Thinking about who does what,
and who plays what role is an important part of collaborative
thinking.

Here a few ways of thinking
about roles for the different types of work that Resolve allows you
to do: 以下是在协同工作中分配不同成员时应该注意的
- Lead Colorist/Assistant
Colorists – in this scenario, a lead or supervising colorist
develops the grade on key hero shots, saves stills of those key
shots and then assistant colorists ripple those grades to other
shots using the visual reference of the saved stills as guidance.
Slightly different, a lead colorist can perform primary grades with
assistants trailing behind doing more detailed work like keying or
window tracking. In either case, assistants can see the lead
colorist’s work on a shot after he or she moves on to another
shot.
- 调色师 -

- Assistant Editors –
assistant editors are the unsung heroes of many projects.
Because Resolve uses a first come first served approach to
accessing bins, a good workflow is for each assistant to tackle a
single bin at a time – adding new footage, adding metadata or
beginning rough edits featuring content in that bin.
- 剪辑助理 -

- Multiple Editors –
in an editorial workflow you have to get slightly
more creative because timelines are locked when accessed by the
first user (so is the bin the timeline is in). In this scenario,
one editor would duplicate their timeline into another bin they
create or the second editor made. After work has been completed one
of the editors using the new timeline compare feature would
assemble the final timeline back together.

like the editor to editor workflow, some thought has to be
applied to accessing the timeline or duplicating a timeline into a
different bin so a sound engineer can work. Or you could keep
things more simple and simply wait until editorial is done before
audio takes over!

- Delivery –
anyone in a collaborative workflow can handle output and
delivery, but generally speaking, I would leave these tasks to
video-centric folks – editors/colorists. I’ve found (at least with
my team) the audio folks are a little nervous around codecs,
containers, etc.

see how they think about who does what and how they do it
evolves.

It’ll be interesting as more and more
people put Resolve 14 collaborative workflow into play how roles

Enabling &
Joining Collaborative Project
启用与加入可协同编辑项目
In Resolve 14, the collaboration
option can be easily found under the File menu.
在达芬奇14中,能在 文件

Enabling collaboration on a
project is as easy as choosing the collaboration option from the
file menu – remember collaborative features are only available with
Resolve Studio.

Once collaboration has been enabled,
users can simply join the already ‘in progress’ collaborative
project – in the project manager, they’ll see a small icon next to
the name of the project to indicate that the project has
collaboration enabled.

The small ‘people’ icon in the
lower left of a project thumbnail in the project manager indicates
that a project has been configured with collaboration
enabled.

Like previous versions of Resolve, if
a collaborator tries to open a project that another user has open
and does not have collaboration enabled they’ll be given a warning
that the project is in use.
如同此前的版本一样,如果有人打开了一个并没有启用协同编辑的项目,其他用户再试着打开它,将会收到一个此项目正在编辑的警告。
It’s worth noting that a project can
be toggled in/out of collaborative mode which is great for times
when a project needs to remain private.

Configuring
Collaborative User Identities
配置协同编辑成员身份
For collaboration to be effective,
it’s important to know who’s doing what. Additionally, user
identities are important for Resolve’s collaborative chat feature –
discussed next.

After enabling or joining a
collaborative project, your first step should be to set up your
identity. This is done by clicking the collaboration
button.

Your
first stop in any collaborative workflow should be the
collaboration button – here you can configure your collaborative
identity and color to be used throughout Resolve.

In this dialog, you can give yourself
a name (real or fake – it’s your choice) as well as give yourself
an identifying color.

The collaboration button allows
you to quickly assign a name to your user (remember safe for work!)
and see other logged in users. You can even see what OS other users
are on.

The color choice is important – Resolve only
displays user names in a couple places like the collaborative chat
window. For every other visual notification of another users
activity (more on this later) the color of their user is
used.

The color choice that users
assign is important as most visual indications about who’s doing
what in a collaborative project only use this small
icon.

Remember, if you forget who’s who, the
collaboration button can also be used to check for other active
users on a project and to quickly see what color they’ve assigned

Using Collaboration
Chat
使用协作聊天工具
In the previous incarnation of the
Resolve, collaborative workflow communication between team members
happened as a shout down the hallway, a phone call to the other
side of the facility, a 3rd party chat utility, or by walking into
to someone else’s room to tell them about what you had done or what
you’re planning on doing with the project.
在以前,团队成员之间一起协作完成工作时的沟通一般都是在走廊之间喊几句,要么打电话,或者第三方的聊天工具,甚至走到别人的房间里告诉他你做了些什么,准备做什么。
While not as full-featured as a
something like Slack or Google Chat, Resolve’s collaborative chat
feature has two big benefits:

Chat那样功能齐全(就别提QQ了吧),但还是有两大优点:
- It’s accessed directly through
Resolve so you don’t have to switch to another
application
- 可通过达芬奇直接访问,无需切换到其他程序。
- It doesn’t require the Internet –
many facilities purposely do not put workstations on the Internet.
Resolve’s collaborative chat feature is self-contained, meaning all
it requires is the shared database server.

The collaboration chat feature
is self-contained within Resolve, meaning that it doesn’t require
an Internet connection just a working Resolve database
server.

Once a collaborative user has
configured their identity, messages can be sent just like any other
chat utility.

No annoying dings, or pop-up
windows here! When you have a new message in collaboration chat the
chat icon simply lights up.

First Served – Bins
& Timelines
When it comes to the Media page
and opening timelines (on the Edit page, or Fairlight page), the
first person to select the bin or open a timeline locks that that
bin/timeline for other users (note: any timelines within a selected
bin are locked as well).

This means that other users can’t make
any modifications to metadata or make any edits on the timelines.
They can, however, see in progress work (more on that in a
moment)

In this screenshot, I can see
that my assistant Catherine is working in this bin because of the
blue icon she chose. Bins, as well as timelines within bins, are
locked to other collaborators while someone is controlling that
bin.

Collaborators get a visual
notification that a user is working in that bin or on that
timeline. When the person who first selected the bin or opened the
timeline moves to another bin or timeline, those items are
available for other collaborators to make
changes.
有人在Bin以及其中的时间线中编辑时,参与协作的成员们会有可视化的提醒。当有人完成某个Bin中的工作并移动到另一个Bin中时,其他人就可以对这个Bin进行编辑了。
When the current controller of a
bin/timeline makes a change, collaborators will see a refresh icon
for the bin/timeline. Clicking this icon ripples changes to
clips/timelines out to the collaborator’s own
timeline.
当一个Bin或者时间线被某人修改后,其他成员可以看到一个刷新图标出现在Bin或者时间线的名称旁边。点击即可将修改后的部分同步到自己这边。
I had asked Catherine to add
metadata to some clips in this footage bin. Instead of a constant
stream of notifications about updates, I get this refresh icon.
When I click it all her work is visible to me.
//我让Catherine为一些Bin中素材添加了元数据。而不是对她修改结果的实时更新,我只是会看到这个刷新图标。当我点击它我就能看到她的工作结果了。
On the Edit page, you can also
quickly identify who’s working on the timeline. In this screen,
Catherine sees that I’m editing a timeline.

While there is some interaction needed
by users when collaborating on bins/timelines, I understand why
Blackmagic did it this way. Editorial changes and changes to
metadata can come fast and furious – it’d suck if other
collaborators received a constant stream up of updates as it’d be
hard to keep up with the timeline changing all the
time.
虽然在Bin或者时间线上的协作时,成员之间需要进行一些交互,但我明白为什么Blackmagic采用这了这种方式来实现。元数据的编辑、更改通常都会有大量的修改数据

When it comes to collaborative
workflow, it should be no surprise that Blackmagic’s new approach
shines on the Color page.
一旦来到达芬奇的协同工作流程,可能你对达芬奇调色页面的亮点就不会感到特别地惊讶了。
Gone are the Resolve12.5 approaches of
owner/collaborator and having to reload projects, etc.
以前版本中编辑项目的人以及参与者都需要时常重新加载项目来刷新之类的。
In Resolve 14, the first person to
access a shot temporarily (while they’re working on it) controls
that clip. While they’re working on the shot, every other
collaborator will get visual queues that that clip is being worked
on (both on the Thumbnail timeline and in the Viewer).
在达芬奇14版中。第一个访问这一条镜头开始编辑的人就有了对这个镜头的控制权。当有人在进行调色工作时,其他成员就会在时间线缩略图和查看器中看到。
When
a collaborator (in this case Catherine) is working on a shot, I get
a visual icon in the viewer and thumbnail timeline that she’s
working on it. Once Catherine moves to another shot I’ll be able to
see the results of her work. 当一个成员(比如此时的Catherine)正在对一个镜头调色时,我这边将会看到一个她的小图标出现在时间线缩略图和查看器中。只要她跳转到下一个镜头时我就会看到之前的调色结果。
The work that is applied to a clip is
only viewable to other collaborators when the original person who
first accessed the clip moves to another shot.

It’s that simple!
No refresh buttons, or having to reload a
project.

From a workflow standpoint, I’ve found
a lot of success so far with me (the lead colorist) well….leading
and an assistant following a shot or two behind doing more tedious
detailed work.

In very time sensitive projects I’ve
found it useful to split up the timeline by shot range, handing
that work off to two or more assistants, and then I check and
refine their work after they move off those shots.

One of the most welcomed features from
a color point of view in the collaborative workflow is shared
stills. Because stills contain a visual representation of a shot
along with the actual nodes that make up that grade, they’re a
great tool for color collaboration.

因为静帧包含了一个镜头的画面风格以及组成调色的节点,因此在调色的协同工作中共享静帧是一个很好的工具。

- Having to switch stills
folders – I’ve found in the current shipping Public
Beta (Beta 2) that stills do update but only after clicking off a
saved stills page and back to that page for a saved still made by
someone else to show up.
- Gallery Organization
– The gallery can quickly get out of control if
everyone in a collaborative project is saving stills. Some
thought should be put into how to organize the gallery. I’ve found
a good system is a stills folder for each person/system. You may
also want to have a master stills page to distribute approved
looks.

如果所有成员都在保存静帧画廊可能很快就会崩掉。所以得想办法管理一下。我就发现每个成员都建立一个文件夹各自保存这样会好很多。你也可以用主静帧页面来向其他成员分发参考的静帧。
- Naming Stills –
I often confuse myself saving stills for my individual
projects! Naming stills becomes particularly important when working
with others. Be as descriptive as possible to let other users know
what the still is for and why it was saved.

Shared stills are an awesome
feature of Resolve collaboration, but attention must be paid to
keeping your still pages organized, as well as labeling stills and
getting rid of old ones.
//共享静帧是达芬奇协同工作中一个很棒的功能,但是必须注意的是要保持静帧页面有序的管理,以及标记静帧和及时清理不需要的静帧。
Equally important with shared stills
is removing old/not used stills. The more people involved in a
collaborative workflow, the more chances that corrections in saved
still could be applied wrongly to shots in the color page
timeline.
与共享静帧同样重要的是删除旧的或者不使用的静帧。
参与协同工作流程的人越多,错误地把不需要的静帧应用于时间轴上的可能越多。

To be honest, the Fairlight page is
still a work in progress and would be better served once it’s
properly built out and demoed in a collaborative sense with an
audio engineer who is more familiar with the toolset.
Hopefully, in a future Insight, we can do
