Bram Stoker's Dracula
All about the writer
Bram Stocker is an Irish writer, who was born
in 1847 and dead in 1912. Best known for his vampire novel
Draculathat was finished in 1897,he was called the king of
vampire literature. Having created the most popular vampire of all
time. Originally from Dublin. Stoker was best known in his own day
as the partner of Henry Irving with whom he ran the famous Lyceum
Theatre in London from 1878 to 1905. His other novels include
The Mystery on Sea, The Lair of the White Worm, and The
Jewel of Seven Star. These are all that I have found about the
writer.
Something about the novel
itself
Magic literature is a special part of the
western liter
ature, which is very popular with the readers. And the storys about
vampire are the main branch of it. A large amout of writers has
written it, but Bram Stocker’s creation of the cult hero Dracula is
most successful and followed by moviemakers, writers, playwrights.
Dracula is now considered to be one of the all-time classics of
horror literature.
The main characteristics of the Count
Dracula
At first, I will talk about his powers and
supernatural traits. Dracula, who survives on the blood of
human beings and can shape-shift into the form of a wolf or bat.(
Everything that I have read or saw about vampire doesn’t mention
that they can become a wolf, so I think maybe the charactor of
vampire has also changed with the time passing by.) is potentially
immortal and has the strength of twenty men. He apears as mist or
elemental dust, has no reflection in mirror, and casts no shadow,
which is in common with image of ghost described in Chinese novels.
What scare us human is that he can turn vicyims into vampires as
well as his hypnotic power. However, he has some limitations as
well. He may not enter a house unless he is invited in and he must
sleep on the soil of his native land. He loses his supernatural
powers during daylight hours and he is afraid of garlic and holy
symbols such as cross and holy wafer. If he is driven a stake
through his heart and decapitated, he will be
destroyed.
The story of Count
Dracula
In the year of 1462, Constantine was hit by
Turks. Count Dracula was ordered to fight against Turks. However,
when he won the war, there was a rumour that he was killed. His
wife was very sad and suicided. When truimphal Dracula saw his
wife’s body, he ask God angrily why these happened. He sticked a
lance into Jesus on the cross. From then on, Dracula has been a
member of evils-----an immortal vampire.
Four hundreds years later, in the 1875’s
London, Jonathan Harker was a letter from a very rich man who lived
in Transylvania and wanted to buy a house in England. He accepted
this job, but had to part with his fiancee---Mina. The host of
Castle Dracula was Count Dracula who had become a vampire. However
all of these are Dracula’s plots that he wanted to march into
London through Jonathan. Though the business was finished, Count
Dracula was unwilling to let him go. He imprisoned Jonathan in the
castle. During this spell, he kept writing diary for what he
had seen. When Jonathan found that he could not see Dracula in the
mirror, he realized there was something wrong. Heard the words that
Count Dracula said to female vampire, he desided to escape from the
death. Meanwhile, Jonathan’s fiancee Mina was worried about him
very much. After receiving a letter from Jonathan, she felt a
little better, but what she didn’t know was that it was Count
Dracula who ordered Jonathan to write this latter. And her friend,
Lucy, also wrote a letter to invited her to stay with her at
Whitby. The danger unkwon was coming to the two bueatiful women stp
by step. The Russian ship on which there were many coffins filled
with earth arrived in this town. That ninght, Lucy was missing and
attacted by Count Dracula. A day or two later, Mina received a
letter from Jonathon, which said he was ill and hospital in
Budapest. This time, it was Jonathan who escaped from the castle
and saved by some workmen in the mountain. Mina left Lucy to meet
her fiance. They were married on September 1st, and then
began their journy home.
The happy time always flied fast. When
Jonathan saw Count Dracula in a carriage on the street, they were
immersed in trouble again.
The friend of Mina, Lucy had died during this
spell. Although the Jack Seward and Professor Van Helsing who was
from Holland had tried their best, they could not save Lucy. Some
days later, therewere strang stories in the newspapers, stories
about young children who went out at night and did not go home
until the next morning. And all when they did go home, they talk
about a “beautifull lady”. All these children had drops of blood
and two little wounds on their necks. These drawed the attention of
Ven Helsing. He suspected that Lucy had become a vampire. In order
to demonsrate it, they went to Lucy’s tomb and found that there was
not Miss Lucy’s body. After making all these clear, they were
determined to bring her back. Lucy’s fiance took a piece of wood in
his left hand, and the hammer in his right hand. Then he drove the
wood through Lucy’s heart. It was not that easy to do so for
lovers. But he succeded. Ven Helsing closed the coffin again, this
time, for ever. That was when they realized that they must find the
vampire and kill him. They met Jonathan in London and went to Count
Dracula’s house together. They put holy wafer in the coffins. It
took a long time to break open each coffin and put holy bread
inside. When they were just opening the last coffin, Count Dracula
was back. They harried to Jack’s house for a fear that Mina might
be in danger. But it was too late. Mina was drinking Count
Dracula’s blood, when they reached. Ven Helsing held up his gold
cross. Count Dracula moved back and dropped Mina’s body. Mina was
turning to vampire gradually. They can knew something about Count
Dracula through Mina. Although they had met some trouble in finding
where Count Dracula was, they finally grasped him during the
daylight. As we know, whensun went down, he would be free to move.
Jonathan held his knife high over his heart, and brought it down as
hard as he could. It went straight through the vampire’s heart.
Count Dracula gave a horrible scream and then lay quiet…Mina had
been saved.
My feeling
The story follows the rule that justice
defeat evil. I read the shorthand version, so it is not as
wonderful as origianl work. But the story itself has impressed me
very much. The plot is arranged very compact as well as
fascinating. The men have shown their great mind and courage, when
they are fighting with Count Dracula. The lovers have shown the
unmodifiable love. Although we may not meet this legend in our real
life, Count Dracula is just like a task we have to accomplish. On
the way to success, we surely meet some trouble, the traits of
those people in the novel are what we need. Don’t be afraid of it.
Just do it!!
