“或者”和“还是”的差别

Chinese grammar--The difference between 或者and 还是

（连词）表示选择。
(conj.) indicating to select.

（一）“或者”、“还是”都可以表示选择，但是不能通用，它们适用于不同的句式。“或者”只适用于叙述、说明具有两项以上可供选择的情况或条件的叙述句；而“还是”则主要适用于问句，让对方在两个或两个以上的选项中选择一项。例如：
Both mean to select, but they are not exchangeable for they are used in different patterns. “或者” is applicable to the declarative
sentences of stating or illustrating the situations or conditions with more than two items provided to be selected, “还是” is mainly applicable to the interrogative questions which provide the opposite sides to select one from the two or more than two items. For example:
大学毕业以后，我或者参加工作，或者继续读书。
这次会你去参加，或者他去参加，都行。
你们骑自行车，还是坐汽车去？
咱们先学习后讨论，还是先讨论后学习？
*星期六下午，我们常常去外边玩，还是去商店买东西。
*这样说对，或者那样说对？
*晚上，我们常常聊天儿还是唱歌。

（二）“还是”有时也可以用在叙述句中，但是只能构成词组作句子的某一成分，而且这一成分本身要含有疑问的意思。这种时候不能用“或者”。例如：
“还是” sometimes is used in the declarative sentences, but it can only make up a certain part of the sentence and this part itself should imply the meaning of being interrogative, and here “或者” can’t be used. For example:
我也不知道先去西安好，还是先去上海好。
他说他也不清楚在学校集合，还是在车站集合。
*我也不知道先去西安好，或者先去上海好。
*他说他也不清楚在学校集合，或者在车站集合。
