“继续”和“持续”的差别

Chinese grammar--The difference between 继续and 持续

“继续”和“持续”都有延续不断的意思，但是大多不能换用，这是因为它们意义的侧重角度不同，由此也形成用法上的差别。
Both “继续” and “持续” mean continuing without stop, but in most cases, they are not interchangeable, because they emphasize different points in meaning, which leads to the difference in usage.

（一）意义上
“继续”和“持续”最大的差别在于：“继续”可以中断，然后接着进行，也可以不中断；“持续”不能中断，必须是一直保持者某种动作、状态灯。例如：
The greatest difference is that “继续” implies going on after suspending
while “持续” expresses going on in a specified course of action or condition without interruption. For example:
大家休息好了吧？好，继续干吧！
*大家休息好了吧？好，持续干吧！
我跟他的书信往来持续了二十多年。
年利润持续增长。

（二）用法上
1、“持续”后面除了接发展、变化等动词外，一般要接表示持续状态的助词“着”，或者趋向动词、延续的时段、延续到某时刻的时点等；“继续”在表示不中断的意义时，也可以这样用，但是表示中断后接着进行的意思时，就不能怎么用了。“持续”正不能用于中断后接着进行的情况。例如：
Besides followed by verbs expressing changes or developments, “持续” should be followed by the aspect particle “着” which indicates the continuing state, or the verb of tendency, period of time and moment etc.; when “继续” indicates no interruption, it can be used the same way. However when “继续” means going on after an interruption, it can not be used this way. “持续” can not be used in case of going on after interruption. For example:
他们的斗争还在持续着。
我们的友谊一直持续到现在。
他们又继续前进了。
咱们继续写吧。

2、“继续”后面可以带名词性宾语；“持续”不能。例如：
“继续” can be followed by a nominal object; while “持续” can not. For example:
一年以后，他又继续了父亲未竟的事业。
谁继续他的话题说一说？
*一年以后，他又持续了父亲未竟的事业。
*谁持续他的话题说一说？

3、“继续”可以用作名词；“持续”不能。例如：
“继续” can be used as a noun; while “持续” can not. For example:
到农村去了解农村和农民是课堂学习的继续。
*到农村去了解农村和农民是课堂学习的持续。
