一切的压迫和羞耻
我听到青年人因自己做过的事
悔恨不安而发出的秘密的抽搐的哽咽
我看见处于贫贱生活中的
母亲为她的孩子们所折磨
绝望 消瘦奄奄待毙 无人照管
我看见被丈夫虐待的妻子 我看见
青年妇女们所遇到的无信义的诱骗者
我注意到企图隐秘着的嫉妒和
单恋的苦痛 我看见大地上的这一切
我看见战争 疾病 暴政的恶果
我看见殉教者秋囚徒
我看到海上的

谁应牺牲来维持其余人的生命
我看到倨傲的人们加之于
工人 穷人 黑人等的污蔑与轻视
我坐而眺望着这一切的一切
无穷无尽的卑劣行为和痛苦
我看着 听着 但我沉默无语
I sit and look out upon all the sorrows of the world
and upon all oppression and shame
I hear secret convulsive sobs from young men at
anguish with themselves, remorseful after deeds done
I see in low life the mother misused
by her children dying neglected gaunt desperate
I see the wife misused by her husband
I see the treacherousseducer of young women
I mark the ranklings of jealousy and
unrequited love attempted to be hid
I see these sights on the earth
I see the workings of battle pestilence
tyranny I see martyrs and prisoners
I observe a famine at sea
I observe the sailors casting lots who
shall be kill’d to preserve the lives of the rest
I observe the slights and degradations cast by arrogant
persons upon laborers the poor
and upon negroes and the like
All these all the meanness and
agony without end
I sitting look out upon
