可笑寒山道,而无车马踪;
泣露千般草,吟风一样松;
Tr: Gary Snyder
The path to Han-shan's place islaughable,
A path, but no sign of cart orhorse.
Converging gorges - hard to tracetheir twists
Jumbled cliffs - unbelievablyrugged.
A thousand grasses bend with dew,
A hill of pines hums in the wind.
And now I've lost the shortcuthome,
Body asking shadow, how do youkeep up?

Tr: Gary Snyder
In a tangle of cliffs, I chose aplace -
Bird paths, but no trails for me.
What's beyond the yard?
White clouds clinging to vaguerocks.
Now I've lived here - how manyyears -
Again and again, spring andwinter pass.
Go tell families with silverwareand cars
'What's the use of all thatnoise and money?'
Go tell families with silverware and

Tr: Gary Snyder
In the mountains it's cold.
Always been cold, not just thisyear.
Jagged scarps forever snowed in
Woods in the dark ravinesspitting mist.
Grass is still sprouting at theend of June,
Leaves begin to fall in earlyAugust.
And here I am, high on mountains,
Peering and peering, but I can'teven see the sky.

Tr: Gary Snyder
I spur my horse through thewrecked town,
The wrecked town sinks my spirit.
High, low, old parapet walls
Big, small, the aging tombs.
I waggle my shadow, all alone;
Not even the crack of a shrinkingcoffin is heard.
I pity all those ordinary bones,
In the books of the Immortalsthey are nameless.

Tr. Gary Snyder
I wanted a good place to settle:
Cold Mountain would be safe.
Light wind in a hidden pine -
Listen close - the sound getsbetter.
Under it a gray haired man
Mumbles along reading Huang andLao.
For ten years I havn't gone backhome
I've even forgotten the way bywhich I came.

Tr: Gary Snyder
Men ask the way to Cold Mountain
Cold Mountain: there's no through trail.
In summer, ice doesn't melt
The rising sun blurs in swirlingfog.
How did I make it?
My heart's not the same as yours.
If your heart was like mine
You'd get it and be right here.
Cold Mountain》

Tr: Gary Snyder
I settled at Cold Mountainlong ago,
Already it seems like years andyears.
Freely drifting, I prowl thewoods and streams
And linger watching thingsthemselves.
Men don't get this far into themountains,
White clouds gather and billow.
Thin grass does for a mattress,
The blue sky makes a good quilt.
Happy with a stone under head
Let heaven and earth go abouttheir changes.

Tr: Gary Snyder
Clambering up the Cold Mountainpath,
The Cold Mountaintrail goes on and on:
The long gorge choked with screeand boulders,
The wide creek, the mist blurredgrass.
The moss is slippery, thoughthere's been no rain
The pine sings, but there's nowind.
Who can leap the world's ties
And sit with me among the whiteclouds?

Tr: Gary Snyder
Rough and dark - the Cold Mountaintrail,
Sharp cobbles - the icy creekbank.
Yammering, chirping - alwaysbirds
Bleak, alone, not even a lonehiker.
Whip, whip - the wind slaps myface
Whirled and tumbled - snow pileson my back.
Morning after morning I don't seethe sun
Year after year, not a sign ofspring.

Tr: Gary Snyder
I have lived at Cold Mountain
These thirty long years.
Yesterday I called on friends andfamily:

Slowly consumed, like fire down acandle;
Forever flowing, like a passingriver.
Now, morning, I face my loneshadow:
Suddenly my eyes are bleared withtears.

Moonlight on Cold Mountainis white
Silent knowledge - the spirit isenlightened ofitself
Contemplate the void: this worldexceeds stillness.

I roamed hundreds and thousandsof miles.
Walked by rivers through deepgreen grass

Today I'm back at Cold Mountain:
I'll sleep by the creek andpurify my ears.

Tr: Gary Snyder
I can't stand these bird songs
Now I'll go rest in my strawshack.
The cherry flowers are scarlet
The willow shoots up feathery.
Morning sun drives over bluepeaks
Bright clouds wash green ponds.
Who knows that I'm out of thedusty world
Climbing the southern slope of Cold Mountain?
