Should we revive traditional Chinese characters or continue
using simplified characters? This has been an intensely discussed
question for years. The following are the supporters’ and
opponents’ opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides
and writer your response in no less than 200 words, in which you

your view on the issue.

Traditional characters, which
date back to more than 2000 years ago, have a more beautiful
appearance and a more reasonable structure. As indicated by the
亲 and 爱
examples, traditional characters make more
sense, convey traditional values and can therefore represent
traditional culture.
For two millennia, Chinese historical records and classic
works were written in traditional characters. To be able to read
them and inherit traditional culture, we need to bring traditional
characters back.
Politically, it is also necessary to restore traditional
Chinese characters. Currently, traditional characters are still in
used in Hong Kong, Taiwan and many Chinese communities around the
world. Restoring them can contribute to cross-Straits exchanges and
national reunification and unite Chinese people around the
world.

In today’s world, efficiency
matters most. Traditional characters, which usually have more
strokes than simplified ones, are more difficult to learn. By
contrast, simplified characters are much easier to learn and
use.
Over the past 50 years, lots of classic texts have been
turned into simplified-character versions, which means simplified
characters can also promote and preserve traditional
culture.
Constant simplification has been a trend in the evolution of
Chinese characters. From the oracle bones script of 3000 years ago
to traditional characters, the Chinese writing system has always
been slimming down for better communication.

题目为：Should we revive traditional Chinese
characters?
Opinions differ tremendously when people discuss the topic whether
the traditional Chinese characters should be revived. The
affirmative side argues that traditional characters reflects our
culture and our way of thinking and is beautiful and sensical. The
negative side, however, emphasizes the efficiency of communication
and believes that only the simplified characters can best serve
this function.
As for me, the opponents' viewpoint, though appealing and plausible
on surface, is trivial and superficial. First, with the help of a
multitude of softwares, it is as easy to keyboard and write
traditional characters as to work on simplified ones. Second, the
current writing system is lacking in the beauty evident in the
traditional system. That is why calligraphers insist on writing
characters in the traditional way. Finally, simple and easy as the
simplified characters appear, they fail to convey as much cultural
messages as the classic characters.
As is shown in the
following example '國', the ancients thought a country should
provide for, shelter and protect its people. In their mind , '口'
was a symbol of boundary, and “或” signified that people who used
the weapon to protect their territory. How vivid, picturesque and
revealing the traditional Chinese characters are! By contrast, the
simplified form “国”does not seem to make any sense.
Also, expect for in China mainland, characters invented by our
ancestors are in use in Europe, North America ,Taiwan, Hong Kong,
Macao and other overseas Chinese communities. If we can bring them
back, overseas Chinese would find our mother-country more intimate,
closely-unified and harmonious.
