英美两国对所在楼层的不同表达
中英美三国对地下室的称呼是相同的:
the 1st basement地下一层
the 2nd basement地下二层
小心!中英美三国对地上楼层的称呼是不同的。我们应该注意上下文发生的国家，或作者的国籍。
然而，再往上走大家就要注意了，否则就有可能爬错楼层。
美国和中国的楼层顺序是一样的，从1往上排列。
英国则把一层称为
the ground floor。
二层称为
the 1st floor。
依次类推。
建筑的顶层则可以称为
the top floor。
英国人表达第一层楼通常说

the ground floor,美国人则说the first
floor;
英国人表达第二层楼通常说the first floor,美国人则说the second floor。
以此类推，美国人说高于二层以上的建筑时要比英国人多一层。
比如：大厦的二层高有一个捐款箱。
英国人这样说：
There is a donation box on the first floor of the
building.
美国人这样说：
There is a donation box on the second floor of the
building.
英美两国对楼层数目的不同表达
英国人表述“楼层数目”的通常用storey,美国人则用story。
比如表达中文意思中的二十层楼：
英国人这么说：
A building of 20 storeys或者a 20-storey building
美国人这么说：
a building of 20 stories或a 20-story building

如果说在第几层，英国人通常只说on...floors.
而美国人还可以说in...story.
例句：那栋18层高楼的第16层失火了，然而那层居然没有灭火器。消防队员不得不从其它楼层取水。
英国人这么说：
The 15the floor of the 18-storey building was on fire and there was
no fire extinguisher on that floor.The firefighters had to take
water from other floors.
美国人这么说:
The 16the floor of the 18-story building was fire and there was no
fire extinguisher on that floor.The firefighters had to take water
from other floors(in other stories).
TIPS
我国香港由于历史原因受英国英语影响较深,因此按照英式英语的语言习惯。澳大利亚等英联邦国家也是如此。
据《圣经新约马可福音》中记载，在最后的晚餐时耶稣被第13个门徒犹大出卖。此外，绞刑架的断头台也有13级台阶。因此基督徒认为13是个不吉利的数字。不仅是楼层，座位号乃至门牌号等都会跳过这个数字，有12A表示，13则用12B或者14A来表示。
