旧梦重温 going through old dreams

Comrade Yidi Wang became an editor of the China Children Press as early as 1957 and we came to know each other at the meetings held by Children Literature. I find it a great honor to be asked to write a preface to this collection of his essays.I find it a great honor to be asked to write a preface to this collection of articles by Comrade Wang
Yidi, who became an editor in the China Children Press as early as 1957. I came to know him at the meetings held by “Children’s Literature”

Meetings vs parties vs get-togethers

I’d rather acknowledge that my time and energy seem to be fading away(be running short). I was unable to read carefully and enjoy(carefully enjoy不好搭配,所以如此处理) all the articles he had sent me, but I was fully aware of the charm of his writings. In “Episodes in My Homeland near the Sea”, he revealed his love for his childhood life. In “A River at Heart”, he (换主语)expressed his deep feelings towards the flowing water of a creek, which reminded me of my own love for the boundless, vast sea.

In china, he has been to many places which I have never visited, with the expectation of the Jinggang Mountains. His trips to Aksu on the Silk Road, the Danggula and the Kunlun Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway and many other places all aroused my envy. In recent years, unable to move about easily, I have been leading a dull life like that of “a frog at the bottom of a well”. Reading his travel notes gave me great pleasure because they are so colorful and vivid that I felt I was actually there.(先说感受,再解释原因,很符合英文思路)

Overseas, he has been to places such as London, Paris, Rome and Florence in Europe, which I had visited half a century ago. Times are different, but the historic sites, I presume, must have remained the same. Just like going through old dreams, I remembered the three weeks I had spent in London in 1936. During that time, when the sun, the moon and the stars were hidden behind the thick frog day and night, I visited the British Museum and the Westminster and called on my English friends. What I liked best was the refreshing green which could be seen all over the country. It was much more pleasant to eye than Beijing before liberation.

Speaking of Paris, I could never forget the hundred days I had spent there. I lived on the sixth floor of a building in a street named after the Italian poet Maria Hilida in District 7(“My Landlady”(vs landlord,篇名用引号,书名用斜体) included in my book About Women was based on some of my experiences in Paris at the time). As I was very close to the Louvre, I would loiter in the palace(避免重复的方法) the whole morning. The portrait of Mona Lisa was hung above a narrow, long table with two green candles on either side. I would often stand at the table, having my simple breakfast—a bar of chocolate. After that, I would come out and sit on the steps at the entrance of the palace, enjoying the big flower beds near the gate filled with blooming tulips of distinctive red, yellow, white and purple.

A Italy is one of my most favorite European countries. It is built of stone: stone palaces, stone churches, stone coliseum, stone states, and stone roads.
B Italy is one of my favorite European countries. The palace, the church, the Coliseum, the statue and the road were all built with stones, so it is a country built with stones. You can see fountains along the road frequently.
C Italy, one of my favorite European countries, is built by stones. There are stone palaces and churches, stone Coliseums and statues, stone roads by which sometimes there are fountains.
D Italian is one of my favorite European countries which was built up with stones, such as the stone palaces, stone churches, stone colosseums, stone sculptures and also stone roads which have some fountain stand by.

Italy was my favorite country in Europe. Built up with stone, it had stone palaces, stone churches, stone arenas, stone statues and stone roads dotted with(到处可见) fountains on either side.

A I have almost been everywhere in Rome that is built on seven hills and has a size of 500 churches.
B Rome is a city that was built on the top of seven mountains, with more than 500 churches where I have almost visited,
C Rome is a city built on seven mountains, possessing 500 churches either big or small, and I have almost been to all of them.
D Roman is a city situated on the top of the seven mountains, it has 500 churches vary in size and most of which I had visited before.
Rome was located on seven hills with 500 churches, big and small(必须放在后面), and I visited nearly all of them.

A The largest churches are St. Peter's, St Mary, St. John and St. Paul. The Vatican is the papal palace near St. Peter's Church, which is a 'state within a country'! I just remember that the commissionaire is a Swiss soldier who wears a yellow uniform when I looked into. There is no other impression except this.
B of which the biggest are Saint Peter, Sancta Maria, St. Johns, and Sao Paulo. Vatican is located near the church of Saint Peter, which is the palace of pope. It is a country called 'a state with a state'! I have entered into Vatican, only remembering that the guards were Swiss soldiers, besides this, without no other impressions.
C The biggest ones are Saint PeterSaint MariaSaint John and Sao Paolo. Vatican, the palace of Roman pope, is near the Sao Paolo Church, and it is a “nation in nation”! Having entered and seen it, I only remembered that the janitors were Swiss soldiers who wore yellow uniform, and without other impressions.
D St. Peter's, St Mary, St. John and St. Paul are the bigger ones. The Vatican—— a Roman papal palace near St. Peter's Church that I had ever visited is called 'state within a country'. My only impression on it was that the gate guards were Switzerland soliders who were in yellow uniforms.

The biggest ones were St. Peter’s, St Maria’s, St. John’s and St. Paul’s. Not far from St. Peter’s was the Vatican(以地点开头往往可以用倒装), the palace of the Pope in Rome, constituting a country within a country(原文用了3个是,译文用了一个简单句,包含一个同位语,一个分词短语). I went there to have a look. All I remember now is the guards at the entrance were Swiss soldiers in yellow uniform.

A Florence has left me not only the impression of the museum statues and murals but also the impression of a seat mansion on the wall lamp holder. Each lamp has a Shauna hoop that is very chic when tied to the party or banquet horse!
B Florence left me an impressive impression: besides the statue and the fresco in the art gallery, also including the lamp holder on the walls of mansion houses. Under each of the lamp there is a iron hoop used to tie the horses when there is a party or dinner. What unique it is!
C Except for the statues and frescos in the art gallery, the impressions that Florence left me were the lamp holders on the wall of mansions. Under each lamp is an iron circle which is used to tie horse when there is a party or banquet, and it’s quite unique and exquisite.
D Besides the sculptures and wall paintings, what Florence impressed me was a set of lamp-sockets on the wall and each of them had an iron hoop to fasten the horses when people were gathering and treating. they were quite delicate.

What remains of Florence in my memory is, apart from the sculptures and murals in the art galleries, the lamps on the walls of the mansions, with an iron ring under each of them, for tying horses at parties and banquets. It was just unique.

Remain

Owing to the difference in times and perspective, Yidi’s description of those places has brought their other aspects to my attention and broadened my knowledge.
Make sb do sth

Letting my pen take its course, I have written about practically nothing but my own memories and this is proof of the charm of this collection of essays. I must say that Yidi’s book about his childhood and his travels is a best choice for young people and should be read by adults as well, because it is sincere in feeling and lucid in description. It is a very readable, healthy and inspiring book.(单独成句有概括全文的气魄!)

若一定要单独成句,可以说 this is because。。。。。
