这6名中学生组成的数学奥林匹克国家队，将代表中国参加于今年7月在阿根廷马德普拉塔市举办的第53届国际数学奥林匹克（IMO）。

关于数学：早在上世纪80年代，钱学森就提出观点，在人类整个知识系统中，“数学应该与自然科学和社会科学并列”，称为“数学科学”。目前这种观点已经被广泛认可，尤其是21世纪自然科学领域、尤其是高新科技的发展，人们发现，一个学科发展的越成熟、越先进，与数学的联系就越密切、就越依赖数学。
从大学的院系设置来看，数学学科的地位也在不断的提升到它应有的位置。例如北京大学的“数学科学学院”，清华大学设置的“数学科学系”，等等。而从数学优秀的中学生里选拔好的苗子，不仅仅是顶尖大学的数学系等理科专业青睐的对象，也是建筑系、金融系、经济管理学院等等这些热门专业争夺的对象。每年的CMO数学冬令营，清华大学、北京大学、复旦大学等顶尖院校的热门院系的老师，都会到现场跟优秀学员直接面谈、签约。
关于数学竞赛的学习：目前国内的中学生，参与和学习数学竞赛，一般的模式是：在校学习结合校外辅导的模式。好一些的学校会设置专门的数学竞赛兴趣学习小组，有专门的竞赛教练；好的辅导机构有仁慧书院九章学塾、学而思教育等。通常在当年10月份的联赛考试之前，各个省份通常将会举行初赛、复赛等，名称和奖项各有不同，由各学校或者各地教研室组织学生参加，形式和名称不同，但都是为了联赛考试资格和名额的分配。
国际数学奥林匹克（IMO）：创办于1959年，是中学生数学大赛，也是国际数学界公认的赛事，在全世界影响巨大。当代很多知名数学家，都是在这次赛事中崭露头角，后来在数学界成就和贡献自己。
中国数学奥林匹克（CMO）：由北京大学、南开大学、复旦大学和中国科技大学四所大学倡议，中国数学会决定，自1986年起每年1月份举行全国中学生数学冬令营。从1990年开始，冬令营设立了陈省身杯团体赛。从1991年起，冬令营被正式命名为中国数学奥林匹克（Chinese Mathematical Olympiad，简称CMO）。CMO题目难度接近IMO，颁奖也与IMO类似，设置一二三等奖（金银铜牌）。这是我国中学生最高级别、最具规模、最有影响的数学竞赛。
从CMO优胜者中选拔学生组成国家集训队，在当年3、4月份组织集训，通过考试选拔6名队员组成国家队，代表中国参加7月份的IMO。
全国高中数学联赛：中国科协主管，中国数学会主办，每年10月中旬进行数学竞赛考试，设置一二三等奖（获得一等奖的学生，可以获得高考保送资格；这项赛事的奖项也是高校自主选拔招生时很看重的奖项）。由各省级赛区中选拔优胜者，参加次年1月份的CMO。
